Just watched the first two sessions of this hip series and I've gotta say I'm pretty into it. What can I expect? How good is it?
>>
Expect characters you fall in love with
Enjoy learning their backstories
Enjoy the fun combination of music, setting and genre-shifting tone
>>
Enjoy getting reported for wrong board.
>>
Expect an ending you never really get the full story of.

Watanabe kept the possibility open for a sequel from the beginning. It's a good thing the sequel to Cowboy Bebop was really Space Dandy. Because that's the last thing Cowboy bebop needs: season 2.

Space Dandy is practically confirmed for taking place hundreds of years later than Cowboy Bebop. Both universes use the same currency and the "Fridge Monster" from the Cowboy Bebop episode "Toys in the attic" reappears in the Space Dandy Episode "The Lonely Pooch Planet, Baby."

Shamploo would be a spiritual successor. Like the System Shock to Bioshock series. Dandy would be the proper sequel.

Does anyone realize how many subtle foreshadowing moments and parallels there are in this show?

Like the first episode loops back on the final. The fugitive and his girl friend are trying to escape their past. She realizes they will never make it out alive. Same thing happens with Spike and Julia. When she kills her boyfriend, the camera zooms in on Spike's eye. He feels woken up in that moment, just like when they kill Julia.

In Sympathy for the Devil, the old man kid says he feels like a weight has finally been lifted off of him and asks spike if he understands. Spike doesn't, but eventually he does and the ending of the show is "you're gonna carry that weight".

This show is truly a masterpiece

What an ignorant fucking mindset. Why is it anime for people that don't like anime? Anime is a huge medium with many target audiences.

Is everything western that you like TV for people that hate TV?
>>
>>86712627
Clannad After Story (very dramatic slice of life story)

Mushishi (very chill episodic stories about japanese mysticism in the hills of japan)

Mononoke (really trippy experimental style short series that looks like moving wall scrolls)

Samurai Champloo (made from the same guys who made Bebop. Not as good frankly, but hip hop enthusiasts will claim it is because it substitutes the jazz elements with hip hop. Set in feudal japan with more humor and emphasis on entertaining action scenes)

Ghost in the Shell (a bit serious and dry but smart, well animated, and thoughtful)

Texhnolyze (a depressing gritty near future world with individuals caught in the middle of crime and misfortune)

Psycho Pass (modern animu style but don't be fooled, very good sci fi and philosophical look at questions surrounding sci fi technology, governance, and society)

Gotta give him credit. He's not dwelling on the past. His shows are different and he had the decency to wrap up Bebop and not bastardize it like so many franchises do these days. He made the anime masterpiece, he can just relax now and do what he loves, which is make good anime without expectations.

The "you're gonna carry that weight" is from a beetles song about how hard it will be to follow up on great success. Maybe he thought the weight of bebop's success would weigh on him, but it seems he has learned how to move on.

I cant handle dubbed anime very well. I just have an easier time watching while reading along and sometimes cant mentally process spoken sentences as well even if they're in english. There's also a lot of dubbed anime fall victim to really stiff or over / underracted performances and problems with rough translations / missing information (there's probably many bad VA performances from jap VAs but it's not noticeable to a gaijin). Don't really care what anyone prefers but to me it's also the original voice tones just fit the characters better whereas they kind of work with whatever voices they can get for dubs

POSSIBLY CONTROVERSIAL OPINION: It's better to watch the movie in its chronological place within the story in-between episodes 22 & 23, rather than after finishing the series.

It doesn't ruin anything about the last four episodes and "The Real Folk Blues" serves as a much better way to end your time with the characters. Watching the movie first also clarifies and deepens Spike's character going forward.

This is how you should do it if you're watching it for the first time, OP.

Western or at least anglo viewers have always had the concept that anime is about these really deep, serious, dark, mature, violent and artistic stories, but those have always been the exceptions. They're what people want to see because they seem familiar and because they make watching animation in your late teens or adulthood feel more acceptable.

>>
I understand that 90% of posts on /tv/ are always unresearched and are opinions from people who have never watched the source material. But why is that whenever someone posts anime on /tv/ people feel the need to post "old anime is better!!!" in response to every recommendation or opinion. I'm assuming they're basing their opinion solely off their experiences with 2-3 shows they watched when they were 15 but it amazes me that people still keep spamming that same fucking quote.

>when people talk about ""old anime""
>no dezaki, nothing pre-85 in general

>>
>>86714800
Old anime have had a lot of time to establish themselves, and the 80s and 90s had a period of scifi, cyberpunk, ultraviolence, Western influences and an emphasis on visual realism that appeal to Western viewers particularly well (even if in reality that anime made up a small minority of what was made). They want what's already familiar and doesn't make them feel bad about watching animation when they "shouldn't., and they think their little bubble of interests draws the line between good and bad anime. And if this is the anime that serves as their introduction to the medium, it sets them up with the expectation that this is what anime is supposed to be like.

For a long time people also had their anime intake filtered by video distributors and TV networks and there was much less information or no information available on what was being released in Japan. Anime that wasn't that good got forgotten about over time and only the best remained. Things really changed after the mid 00s with ubiquitous internet access, social media, piracy and streaming. Then an assortment of misunderstandings occured which were codified as memes and spread everywhere. Now people "know" that modern anime is bad even if they've never seen a second of it, and they compare it against a ridiculously cherry-picked past.

Something like that.

Yes, even if you can't follow the car stuff (if you can it just makes it that much more amazing) it's a legendary anime. They don't spend much time explaining the actual detailed car mechanics that goes into racing, just the racing itself. Also the first 4 stages are free on YouTube

They remade the first season as a movie trilogy a few years ago with updated, modern visuals, but it's not worth watching simply because it doesn't have the eurobeat soundtrack. That's how important music is to the series. The movies are only good for AMVs.

I didn't fully realize how much I loved cowboy bebop until after I had watched it and analyzed it for a bit. I constantly find myself wishing I had more to their story. You won't be dissapointed with the rest of the series OP, I would recommend watching the movie before the final episode though, because the movie takes place in the middle of the series and doesn't advance the plot really. While I was looking at some Initial D stuff on YouTube I came across a scene from Tokyo Drift (which I saw ages ago and don't remember much about), and it's interesting how violent it is compared to Initial D (at least the first season that I've seen). The Japanese or Asian guy competing against the hero tries to ram him and even kill him, and then eventually crashes himself in a big way. In Initial D there's a sense of sportmanship and respect.

It was a shit episode, period
All the buildup from the previous episode was wasted
We didn't get any confrontation between spike and vicious after their scene in the ballad of falling angels
Also, Faye's subplot is resolved instantly
And the tranny faggot fapping to dreams of making love with vicious again gets his just desserts by vicious who doesn't even bat an eye for that freak
What was supposed to be the lesson? Being a tranny faggot is stupid and leads to your death?

Both will be remembered well 10+ years from now, while all the cash grab shows will be forgotten. And anime fans will think anime has gone to shit in their time, when really history just left behind the gems.

Vicious represents nihilism in the show in case you couldn't pick up on that, the lesson of the episode was supposed to convey to you the differences in people's perspective on life and their reactions to being confused and lost when they can't find what they're looking for. This theme is central to how the plot driven in the series as well btw, and it's Faye's admiration (after initial disgust) at the trannies reaction to wanting to confront Vicious, which resolves her qualms with Be-Bop and allows her to face her own fear of being emotionally committed to people

Budget is relatively unimportant to the quality of an anime, and saving a little money on the budget doesn't somehow guarantee commercial success. Reminder the rise of /v/edditors coming over to /tv/ as a result of Bane memes has led to a shift in taste on /tv/

99% of the anime threads here are made by /v/edditors who only watch LE EPIC MANIME shonen trash and are too scared to post on /a/ because no one wants to talk about the same 5 old classic anime that only entry level newfaggots know about. I didn't know any of this shit for years after I saw NGE. Like I didn't know about all the alien and that bs. It complicates the plot without resolving any of the basic questions about the series. I guess the new movies have retconned a lot of stuff to try to make sense of those basic things (like what Gendo was trying to do, why it was different that what SEELE wanted, who Kowaru was talking to in the lake if it wasn't SEELE)
>>
>>86717999
Nobody said moe was new. Did I say it was new? It's not even a term exclusive to anime. But within anime it's taken on a life of its own that is pretty intensely ironic that now has more to do with the relationship between the obssessive fans of anime and their relationship to society writ large that, and it has become unhealthy for both-- which is a phenomenon that has been recognized and analyzed to death by the career creators in the medium.

And digital animation just doesn't look as good. It's how it goes.

Little girls are a meme. Most of the characters are in middle or high school, usually the latter, and not prepubescent. This is pretty blatantly obvious to anyone who actually watches anime.

Simply having cute girls or "lewd situations" is not a guarantee of success because such things are so mundane. Most shows that are heavy on fanservice don't even have good sales, and not every SoL anime sells either.

People who produce manga and anime are also themselves personally interested in cute girls and fanservice.

I didn't say it was like Ozu.
>>

So you think that because the post mentioned the term 3DPD, the reason I said "I have no idea what you are talking about" was specifically because the term was used? Really?
>>
>>86719392
You're right, sorry.

You talk like a robot.

>People who are ironically into something are just putting on an act

This is a fallacy. I could say I like GoT but that doesn't make me a fan of the genre
>>
>>86719422
No I don't.

>>86719429
It's not a fallacy, it's just the way things are.

Okay I'm officially done and the thread was derailed because of this argument. I honestly have no idea what to say because clearly I'm not going to change your mind.

>Okay I'm officially done and the thread was derailed because of this argument.

I'm just posting an argument from an objective standpoint. I see if you look at it subjectively like you have this whole thread.
>>
>>86719365
Clear examples of this not being true is the comedy of MDE or guys like Tim Heidecker.
>>
>>86719457
You can't change my mind because you are wrong. You have no idea what you are talking about. You are just skimming through a list of anime and jumping to conclusions in a few seconds, barely even paying attention to what you're looking at.

I guess Welcome to the Ballroom is also about little girls.

At least there ate no niggers in anime
Which by default makes it a superior medium

>watch Made in Abyss it's great!
>it's just another childish fantasy show written by some pervert
Stop wasting time on anime. It's garbage.
>>
>>86719511
It's obviously not childish, and what is supposed to be perverted about it?
>>
>>86719502
Is this how brainlets think?

Kek the two shows in the middle look like a copy pasta with the same poses. It's pottery really.
>>

>it's obviously not childish
Yes, and DC adaptations are for mature audiences.
>>
>>86719502
>/tv/ thinks all anime is either shonenshit or ecchi harems hit/cute girls doing cute things
Lmao
>>
>>86719564
DC adaptations have nothing to do with this, you're just trying to execute a "guilty by association" attack.
>>
>>86719562
>Kek the two shows in the middle look like a copy pasta with the same poses.

You think that means the show has the same content?
>>
>>86719562
All of those shows are significantly different from each other.
