Your audio settings are set for 5.1 surround when you are using stereo (or mono). Try to find the audio options and turn that off. It helps a little.

That's great for you anon, but you should double check the setting that Netflix, iTunes, VLC media player or whatever blu-ray you are currently trying to watch is outputting as.
I watch Netflix through my cable box and it ALWAYS defaults to 5.1 audio streaming even though I don't have a surround setup. I have to change it every episode of capeshit that I watch.

No way. I have a 5.1 setup with everything hooked up via HDMI through my Dolby Digital+ receiver.
Whether I'm watching a movie on HBO, Netflix, or a Bluray, I have to constantly make the volume louder during speaking parts, and then lower it for action parts.
And this is AFTER I set the speaker size/distance/subwoofer crossover/settings in my receiver for a "Night Mode".
Hollywood audio mixing is fucking trash.
