The idea of going in the wrong order (ie chronologically, not release date) intrigues me, because Doctor Who is one of the few things were it might be more interesting than confusing. Doctor Who's the product of building off reinterpreting and misinterpreting and all that after all.

Absolutely, yes. You'll know if/when you want to worry about anything more than that. Just start from 2005 and you're golden. 2005, Series 1, 100% designed as jumping-on point. That's why it's series 1!
>>
>>86680758
i recommend you just watch it from the beginning so you get all the references you can get all classic eps on pirate bay
>>
>>86680758
Yes, start with the 2005 series - it can be watched independently of everything else. If you end up enjoying it all and want more, then there's a whole world of classic episodes, audio dramas, novels and comics out there for you to explore. If you ever need help delving into those, /who/ will be here for you.

Currently working my way through the twelfth EDA, Seeing I. It's excellent so far, but I'm really excited for the eventual reunion between Sam and the Doctor. They've been separated for almost four books now (in-world time, it's been a few years), and Sam's really matured in that time away. I really love her as a companion, so I'm curious to see what their dynamic will be like when they're together again. Seems like every time they get close to meeting each other again, they get pulled apart.

>Does it annoy you in Night of the Doctor 8 only mentions audio companions, not book ones?
A little bit. On one hand, I'm alright with just the Big Finish mentions because that retroactively "canonises" (for those that believe Doctor Who canon exists...) the novels because of the The Company of Friends audios. On the other hand, I'm a little bit sad that none of his novel companions got a shout-out. Even if it had just been Sam and Fitz, I'd have been happy. Particularly the latter, seeing as Fitz was his longest-serving companion, story-wise.

I can only imagine they didn't mention them because it was assumed, as far as Eight's companions go, the EDA companions are probably just that little bit more obscure than the Big Finish ones.

I just quietly accept he was thinking of them, even if he didn't say their names aloud.

20min into the first Torchwood S5 episode. Really, really like Mr Colchester. No opinion on Tyler.

The regular TW audios do this too, but hearing the transition buzz noise between scenes is so great. BF don't always use audio cues from their actual shows (let alone music - I implored them to use All the Strange Strange Creatures in 10's audios to no avail), but little ones like that are great.

>>86681794
I mean the literal opening titles, in the credits sequence, not his character musical theme (my favourite of the Doctor's) if that matters.

There's a few that reference them, even vaguely. I think. Either way, The Company of Friends is at least the most explicit audio anthology to refer to the novels, so I'm glad it exists. No jumping through hoops needed to convince people that the novels and audios are all connected and "canon," when TCOF exists. Thank god.

Gotta love that "I want to Doctor Who to experiment, but hate Doctor Who being different" doublethink. He misreads a tonne of the episode too. His whole approach to the show is so alien from mine that I can't find much common ground there at all, besides praising the cast. But god I hate the concern troll attitude of criticising Capaldi Who. So many people like this are perfectly capable of articulating their viewpoints well, but retreat behind "muh ratings".

I used to read Doctor Oho, but when he went back through and redid all his rtd reviews to give him better scores he lost some respect. I understand getting frustrated with Moff, but rereviewing RTD to make Moff look worse in hindsight is disingenuous. Hes also bitched more about mcgann post EDAs than hes deserved.

if you read some of his older reviews on DWRG he used to be a lot more objective. Nostalgia has made him a much worse reviewer
>>
>>86683305
100%. Nothing wrong at all with getting annoyed by, or disliking, Moff's stuff, but the weird kind of ideological fixation people get on lionising RTD and doomsaying Moff and the ratings is just so old and so offputting.

I think some of these people should make peace with the fact the show will get cancelled again one day and live in the present, enjoy the ride, and stop always worrying about the ratings instead of just watching the stories. Especially if you're already a big fan of Big Finish and all that already. I feel like some of these people would much prefer the show being popular rather than the show even being something they genuinely enjoy. "Pioneering storytelling", it's all just buzzwords, cause they dismiss any of the modern attempts at that anyway. It's such a weird mindset. If I really wanted to read into it I'd say it comes from some insecurity about the show. Anyway I'm completely off the topic of Oho by now and just vaguely ranting about Moff haters online.

I mean, I think theres always been a bit of a bias to Oho's opinions and he's always been very strongly opinionated(Fuck, he's the only person I know of to HATE Father's Day. ) but I think digging in his heels to bash Moff the way he does is a disgrace: what kind of person will praise the Slitheen for their shitty design and characters but bash the wood girl thing from knock knock for being shitty? Like, to me theyre both as terrible as the other, the only difference is Knock Knock is one episode where as the slitheen is 2 episodes and come back again.

On the whole the whole doom thing from the fandom is fuckin' stupid as hell anyways. Yeah the show is going to change. But you know what else? Material to evoke an era of the show you like will keep being made as well. Its one of the coolest parts about doctor who: i havent been a huge fan of capaldi, but I havent gotten super negative because Big Finish and 11 books have really hit the spot when things havent been what I wanted.

>>
>>86684371
I'm all for strong opinions, but "I'm so excited/passionate about this opinion of mine" is so much nicer than "IM RIGHT YOURE WRONG" style. Trying to envision NewWho as some huge personality contest between RTD and Moff is just so lame, and like you say, so transparently a silly thing, just look at the Slitheen vs wood girl, people make it a grand RTD vs Moff narrative. I wonder if it drives them loopy that RTD and Moff are mates that respect each other tonnes and love each other's writing.

>On the whole the whole doom thing from the fandom is fuckin' stupid as hell anyways. Yeah the show is going to change. But you know what else? 10000000000000000000%, I can't agree with you more. Nailed it. The show will always be in a golden age for some and a shit age for others, rather than REEEEEing when you don't like the current era, why not just relax and let other people enjoy it? Everything will change again soon enough anyway. That's the whole idea of the show.

>>86684504
>>86684369
I was struggling with writing funny stories until Immigrant advised me to just drop the humour if I was struggling and write whatever I felt like, came much easier after that. I think my stories ended up as massive fanwank but hopefully some amusing moments crept in when I wasn't looking.

The sign is a subtle joke. The shop is called "Sneed's Feed & Seed", where feed and seed both end in the sound "-eed", thus rhyming with the name of the owner, Sneed. The sign says that the shop was "Formerly Chuck's", implying that the two words beginning with "F" and "S" would have ended with "-uck", rhyming with "Chuck". So, when Chuck owned the shop, it would have been called "Chuck's Fuck and Suck".
See, the joke lies within the rhyming of the store's name. Sneed, Feed, and Seed rhyme with each other as they each end in -eed. Taking that away, you are left with Sn, F, and S. The Sn is irrelevant in this point, but the F and S are important factors in this joke. The bottom line "Formerly Chuck's" provokes one to replace Sneed's name in the title, initially producing the name "Chuck's Feed & Seed. However, as the sign had previously conditioned us to rhyme all the words, the mind does not perceive this as the proper name. The mind then subconsciously isolates the F and S and looks to Chuck's name. Ch is thrown out as it has no rhyming value, and the true relevant phonetic begins with -uck. Therefore, applying the suffix to Ch, F, and S, we arrive at the title "Chuck's Fuck & Suck." The end result is a hilariously inappropriate name, one that would never fly on a public store. The reason this is not a true name is both due to an In-Universe reason and a much more abstract reason. Along with being morally offensive, this whole arrangement of words is a cleverly-devised sight gag, meant for someone to glance at it for the fleeting amount of time it has onscreen and ponder about it. "Sneed's Feed & Seed, Formerly Chuck's." They may first wonder who this Chuck fellow is before connecting his name in place of Sneed, and it is then the subconscious rhyming kicks in. The person thinks for a second, laughs, and says something along the lines of "That's hilarious. I can't believe they got away with that."

Elizabeth Sladen never died and SJA continued. The Ace guest episode with McCoy cameo and the Christmas special with Tom as the Proto-Curator happened, opening the door to further Classic wanking on TV, further guest appearances from faces such as Ameribewbs and gobby Aussie who gradually becoming recurring characters in addition to Ace.

Ultimately, SJA is relegated to Big Finish, concluding its TV run in 2014 with a guest appearance by 12 in Series 8. Its place on CBBC is then taken by an Ace spin-off.

You know what, just a general giving a shit about spin-offs in the Moffat era, B.B.C.'s Agents of UNIT gets on TV as does Paternoster Gang instead of Moff keeping the rights away from Briggs.

Or possibly his first season left a bad impression on the casual viewers who don't realise that character progression exists and just have it tainted by first impressions. I think it's even worse with Hartnell, because people use his first few episodes as a judgement of what he's like. He's generally seen as grumpy/stubborn/arrogant/crotchety when in reality it didn't take long for him to turn into the lovable warm, giggling granddad we all later knew him as.

The Tenth Doctor's was presumably only so violent because he held it in while he visited EVERY SINGLE COMPANION HE'D HAD SINCE HIS FIRST INCARNATION. Most regenerations (since it's been established that the Doctor is shit at regenerating) seem to be more like his first incarnation's.
>>
>>86691615
ten's regen was only so damaging cause he'd been holding it in. Plus maybe the radiation? Idk. Imagine if you're been holding in a giant, irradiated shit for a week or however long enough it took you to self indulgently visit all your ex-best friends, and then you finally sit down to let it all out. Your toilet'd be gone, wouldn't it?

BROADCHURCH ENDING SPOILERS

So I finished Broadchurch. I liked the ending. It wasn't very much shocking, Twine Boy was always one of the suspects, but the way it was done is just good. I loved ensemble Latimer scenes, I really enjoyed how cab driver was about to cry when he realised that he couldn't save his son. I felt sorry for both Ed Burnett and Lindsay Lucas, somehow I really care about her, it's both the actress and the writing I think. Some things are kind of confusing, like, why are people so afraid of porn when you can google it anywhere, but I guess it's small town's specifics. I was happy with how the things turned out. Unlike Charlie Brooker's "we are all doomed" philosophy, Chibs always stays positive in the end. Even though literally everyone is a sad loser with shitty life and dark secrets, people still can cope with it and be happy. I absolutely loved Jodie's acting in the night scene. She's a great actress. Also all the Miller-Hardy banter is great and it's probably the best man-woman friendship I've ever seen

But mccoys big finish usually is as bad as mcgann's is good.

...which is to say it usually isn't good and occasionally is WOAT, but occasionally has a run of pretty good stuff in recent years. People seem to have VNA Mccoy in their heads so when big finish reset him back to tv mccoy to build them up their own way it wasnt as good when he started. Not his fault, he never read the VNAs. Also mccoy tends to phone it in sometimes. That is his fault.

You should watch Death of the Doctor
>>
>>86692124
>But Smith's regen was so powerful it destroyed Trenzalore and the Dalek fleet

No, that was the reset, his actual regeneration was tiny. It's likely that the reset was so strong not just because of the energy requirements for twelve more regenerations, but also because the timelords specifically gave the Doctor enough energy to destroy the daleks
>>
>>86692124
>But Smith's regen was so powerful it destroyed Trenzalore and the Dalek fleet
That's probably because he's the last of a cycle, though, isn't it? ("It's gonna be a whopper").

Actually the Time Lords could have used that as a weapon during the War
>>
>>86692326
>Actually the Time Lords could have used that as a weapon during the War
I like headcannoning Rassilon weaponised regeneration to be explosive during the war for combat reasons, hence post Time War NewWho regens being all explosive, and Classic ones being more calm

>Oh, I've tried to watch SJA a few times but it's just too cheesy for me, should I just skip it and watch Death of the Doctor?
Yes. It has some interesting lore stuff. The ep 10 in doesn't but is still kinda neat just to see him again. But yeah watch Death of the Doctor by itself, 11 writing RTD, lots of Classic references, some interesting new revelations.
>>
>>86692461
You can watch Death of the Doctor on its own, but the only relevant part is that 11 implies that 10 visited all of them including Jo. This is what happens when RTD is allowed to go back and add on to his earlier stories.
>>
>>86691615
my headcanon is that the doctor is still expelling the time vortex ever since 9 absorbed it, and each regen has been more explosive than the last, 10 damaged the tardis, 11 blew up dalek ship, and 12 has extra regen energy to just mess around with, as evidence by the witch's familiar and lie of the land

I think I can actually decipher it

He's surprised that the TARDISposting users are reacting to the TimeDick page like it's "real", as generally the commenters on the official Doctor Who FB page are the gullible ones doing stuff like mistaking Big Finish for TV and our wiki for TARDIS Core. Even though ("know?") the link shows it's the different wiki. He disapproves of TARDISposting users being so gullible, and is surprised to see it.
