TM is trance, that is hypnotism, self induced after training. You could learn it yourself. The mantra you receive is a meaningless word meant to trigger the hypnosis. The reason you pay at all is because your meditation leader will be hypnotizing you while you repeat the mantra, until it becomes a form of conditioning that can trigger the trance without anyone else present.

during the trance, you will be giving your own intentions (deep rest and relaxation), and as you are hypnotized, you achieve both these things.
