The first act of the film is straight up boring with none of the artistic flair and brilliant camera work that made the next two stand out. Without Mehershala's acting there would be absolulutely nothing of value to the first third of the film.

I had almost the exact same situation. I was upset about the La La Land winning mistake at the Oscars and thought I had to see the movie that beat it out for Best Picture. Ended up walking away not knowing which one was the better film. Superb.

I didn't think Moonlight was too good and really enjoyed La La Land, but Moonlight is obviously the better made movie. La La Land has a lot of allusions whereas Moonlight creates it's own cinematic magic.
