Most people have asymetric connections so seeding means leaving the torrent running for a hundred times longer than it took to download to hit 1.0 and during that time having no downstream bandwidth either because of the flooded upstream.

Why do torrents seem to throttle download if you set your upload to be less than 20kB/s?

The whole point of torrents is that you DON'T have to seed massive amounts all by yourself; everyone in the swarm contributes a tiny bit which adds up to a whole lot.
