I like to recommend different things because the true list of "great sci fi movies" is actually very short and people recommend the same things all the time over and over. Within a week you would be out of sci fi to watch. If you havent even seen alien maybe you haven't seen the Fifth Element either. Also Source Code is awesome, its about a guy reliving a train explosion.

I used to think Empire Strikes Back was the best because it is sooo dark but now I think Force Awakens is the best, it was so much fun and Rey is a great role model. If you like BSG, you'll like DS9, it's the closest Star Trek ever got to it while still maintaining the feel of the show as they're still striving to better themselves, just under infinitely more difficult circumstances. This is from the pilot which starts during Best of Both Worlds.

SG-1 had amazing world building in that show, and you really get to feel like you are watching the growth of a space-faring civilization, even if they do get quite overpowered by season 9. All the tech that they had in latter seasons you can point to an episode(s) where it was discovered or developed, So when they finally get to making these advanced ships, you can look at them and see all the inspiration from previous ships and designs, all the histories and backstories of all the different reactors, weapons, and even down to the metal the ships are made from. Plus RDA is a national treasure.
