The interesting thing isn't the White Walkers which is why they are so rarely ever in the story, the interesting thing is supposed to be how people react to the threat.

Thus far, the show has been about Jon finding out what the actual threat to the seven kingdoms is and how everyone else is bickering amongst themselvs and ignoring the gravest threat to their world. The point is that this is what what would actually happen if someone said that a bunch of magical ice zombies were invading. So the author can use that reaction to write a bunch of books about all kinds of topics he finds interesting or entertaining and then end the series with a big climax war that puts a clear end to the story without it coming off as a random asspull because he'd been building up to that climax since the first chapter of the story. Without the White Walkers, GoT is just a story about the endless cycle of violence in westeros that cannot ever stop unless literally everyone on the continent dies.

This might be an unpopular opinion here, but I actually don't want this guy to have any dialogue. Any sort of speech from him would just make him seem more "human" for lack of a better term. I kind of like the creepy silence of the walkers. We already have human antagonists like Cersei, Euron or CIA to do the speaking. This guy just needs to provide the action for the final season. It's pretty much his only role anyways. Might be different in the books though.

I'd have liked the show to do that as well. I haven't read the books yet myself but what you're describing sounds pretty neat. Build up his mystery for the first 5-6 seasons before actually introducing him. In fact, from what I've heard about Hardhome in the books they didn't even show it happen. Just mentioned dead things in the water and what not. I'd have liked that better. Adds that nice horror vibe to it.

I've always just assumed that they were waiting for that long ass winter to come. I believe a winter this long hasn't been seen in quite a while. Maybe they need a long winter to actually invade because it is warm as fuck down south. While they themselves wouldn't melt, their wights would start rotting and decomposing without the cold so there goes their army. Maybe that's why they waited until it got this cold before making a move. A mundane explanation, but sort of makes sense. Not that I'm expecting sense from D&D at this point.

Given that Yi Ti also has its own legends about the long night I'd say it's almost a given that they had their own white walker invasion back then. George keeps insisting that his planet isn't a globe and the north doesn't connect to Essos but I'm calling bullshit on this one. Cultures that are literally a world apart coming up with legends that are almost exactly identical to each other. The Wall and the Five Forts, almost the same size as each other protecting a country from a cold, barren wasteland. It's way too coincidental. I think if you keep going north enough you might end up at the Five Forts of Yi Ti, their version of the Wall keeping the walkers out.

The North is one thing but unless he can do something about the hot, humid climate down south, especially in KL or Dorne, his army will start decomposing and scavenger animals will start pecking away at the corpses until there's nothing left. It's not an AoE spell that automatically converts all dead in the north to wights. You need a walker to actively raise the dead. That's why when the walker was killed, his wights all dropped dead. So just leaving a dead body won't do anything unless a walker comes by and actively raises it.
