Only in the B1 mode which only gave you an extra 10 lines of resolution compared to VHS. In B2 and B3 modes, the quality is comparable to VHS and that is what all commercial releases were recorded on, B2, sometimes B3 mode. On my Betamax deck, it hides the B1 mode selector on the back, like Sony was trying to hide this mode that only allowed 1 hour of record time on a standard L-500 tape. Maybe it's because my deck is a Beta Hi-Fi machine.
