You think you're funny, but you're not.

Nice one! Gold + Kino = more gold!

>TSPDT and Criterionshit doesn't count
well the rest of the pre-1950s are lost to history, either literally (as in destroyed or missing prints) or figuratively because they weren't notable enough for one reason of the other and faded into obscurity so much that preservation isnt worth it (bringing it eventually to the literal kind of lost film; exceptions being only auteurist curiosities)
>>86485520
Casablanca ftw

I'm thinking of a word. Here's a hint. It starts with a p and ends with a d.

There seems to be quite a number of users that enjoy film noir. Although, as little as 2 years ago, the frequency, and quality of noir threads was significantly higher.
Guess I better start:
I watched Dark Passage the other night, and i was pretty surprised that Bogart and Bacall would play in such a weak script. Their onscreen chemistry was great, but I couldn't shake the idea that that was the only redeeming quality of the film (maybe the late-40s san francisco scenery was worthwhile too). Her story of 'oh my dad got a raw deal so i obsessed over your case and just happened to be on the road when u escaped' was annoyingly farfetched and the rest of the weak script failed to make up for it. the carnival-canvas car man was so obviously going to be the 'final boss' that it seemed like the entire second act was pointless. lastly, the first person stuff was interesting, but got tiresome and it was clear that they did it because they didn't want to dub bogart's voice over another actor.
overal not that special, but if you love bacall and bogart together then it's worth a watch..
Also recently saw Too Late for Tears and it was just OK as well. The central mystery was mostly uninteresting and the slowburn only made it worse.

>TSPDT and Criterion are anything close to a definitive canon
>>86486636
not Criterion of course, but since TPSDT aggregates hundreds and hundreds of critics' and academics' opinions, it's the closest thing to a cinematic canon out there (if such a thing is even possible)
>>86487087
>but since TPSDT aggregates hundreds and hundreds of critics' and academics' opinions
No, should've stopped there. If you're gonna defend something get the facts right. TSPDT aggregates lists. It's nowhere near close to a cinematic "canon" especially when it has an overabundance of DW Griffith flicks in the silent section.
>>86485520
>No TSPDT
That leaves out everything good, they even have a list of super obscure movies you can't even find on the internet.

i watched some Anthony Mann/John Alton noirs on Filmstruck. Raw Deal, while the most conventional of their noirs, was the best of the bunch. the "docu-noirs," T-Men and He Walked By Night (Mann is uncredited but oversaw most of the shooting), suffered from voiceover narration that killed any story momentum, mood/atmosphere, character psychology. T-Men was especially hurt by that and despite the film being the most lauded bunch, i personally thought it was the worst of the five films featured. He Walked By Night eventually gets going about halfway through once it drops the voiceover

I like Maurice Chevalier and Jeannette McDonald.

how would you go about creating a canon without consulting critics, historians/academics, and filmmakers? who's left? you gonna poll /tv/, Reddit, Letterboxd, imdb, etc.? lmao
>>86487359
>That leaves out everything good
More like eliminates the garbage.

I actually don't think I've seen a single Anthony Mann before, but I'll check out Raw Deal tonight, and maybe He Walked by Night if i remember. Have you seen any of his westerns? if so, whjich do you recc?
The Thin Man is one of my favorite films. Best on screen relationship of all time.
>>86489469
>whjich do you recc
I would think your taste was a big enough moniker, but your spelling confirms it. You're genetically impaired.
I guess I should post this.
>>86489921
i found this one the other day, pretty neta-o i'd say
>>86489956
Beau Geste was kinda disappointing if you read the book, but the story is so dope, if you haven't you'll probably really like it
>>86489921
>Tyrone used to be a white man's name
Intredasting
>>86490056
>book was better
funny you say that, I was just about to respond similarly to >>86489616.
Seriously though, the tone of The Thin Man kind of doesn't translate to film, or at least didn't in this case.
>>86490179
I think I read something by Hammett when I was a kid. I remember it being kinda 40s edgy noir, with a kind of bleakness to it. Is my memory right?
>>86490263
It's the perfect mixture of wisecracks, holmes-esque detective prowess, and total indifference towards the world
>>86489956
Gunga Din is pure kino.
>>86489469
Protip, a lot of noir is on youtube.

I don't watch primitive """cinema"""
>>86491554
DW Griffith has never made a single work that was cinematic, theatrical, or filmic. And he's certainly never made anything that was remotely "primitive".
