I thought it was pretty bad, it had no solid tone and put in shitty jokes even in tense scenes.

First was a surprise, specially for a group of c-class heroes. Except the retarded dance in the final, had some good moments.

However, vol.2 was weak, a poor forced emulation of the first movie. Dumb plot, unnecessary jokes and farfetched act 3 with tons of pop culture references just for fanservice. 4/10, just another Marvel cash movie between... Avengers movies.

I can't wait for a fanedit that cuts out most of the out of place jokes. Nearly every serious scene was undercut with a joke. It'd be easy to do since it already feels like those parts should be edited out in the first place, it's like the scene runs for a extra few seconds for a quip.
>>
>>86485817
A joke has setup and payoff. What youre referring to is a joke, you spend too much time here if you call everything a quip.

Absolute shit.

Boring from start to finish.

Cinematography was p good but all the jokes just felt forced. Boring 'MUH DAD" storyline that took up the entire 2nd half of the movie.

Why the fuck was Gamora's sister even a thing? She was an awful actress and that had literally 0 to do with the plot.

Literally bottom 2-3 of the MCU Universe so far for me.

In Annihilation, Star Lord gives his life to kill Thanos with Nova. In the Infinity Gauntlet, Nebula steals the gauntlet from everyone else fighting over it and the power goes to her head. Also Star Lord shits on Iron Man for his petty Earth squabbles compared to the fate of the universe. Any of these things would make me happy.

It felt like a non-comedy that was attempting comedy every other line.

The first GotG really got it right I think. It was more light hearted and playful than the other films nicely balanced with action and serious moments. It didn't fucking pummel you with wise cracks and one liners then say "OKAY THIS IS THE MASSIVE PLOT TWIST YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO SUDDENLY FEEL AN OVERWHELMING SENSE OF SERIOUSNESS AND IMPORTANCE THAT HAS BEEN COMPLETELY NON-EXISTENT FOR THE LAST HOUR".

It was fun, but one of the weaker Marvel entries for sure.

Everyone did great and all, but the whole cliche storylines of "it wasn't easy for me either" with Gamora and Liara and "long lost dad is a dick" are superbly played out. Literally TV tier storylines and they took frontline. My plebby as fuck never touched a comic girlfriend even called Ego being bad the moment he showed up on the planet where they crashed.

Good to see primary focus being on characters and arcs. Yondu was shockingly great ("He may habe been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy" is probably the best non-meme line in any Marvel film). Hottest women of any Marvel film I think. >>
>>86503855
It's clear they care about each other. That doesn't mean it's a father/son, thing. And it's virtually ignored in the sequel, in which they are actually dealing with Peter's daddy issues, until the very end of the movie. This is mostly because Yondu and Peter spend the vast majority of the film in completely separate solar systems.

That's not how you assemble this kind of story. It's the equivalent of the awkward Obiwan Anakin friendship in the prequel trilogy. Though, even there they very explicitly establish it up front. Guardian's waits until one character is killing himself to suddenly drop this revelation.
>>
>>86504105
I felt it was pretty clear on Yondu's end in both movies. Star-Lord never noticed it until Yondu's death, though.
>>
>>86503396
First is among my favourite movies of the last decade.
I didn't hate this one, but was sure disappointed by it. The jokes felt way too forced.
It was wierd how they all got to like each other in the first and here they were jerks again to each other.
The music was totally forgetable too.
Everything with Yondu and Kraglin was great though.
>>
>>86483973
Nowhere near as good as the first one.

The humour was over the top, with certain jokes playing out for way too long, especially the one with Groot trying to get the blue guys mohawk.

However, visually the film was a major improvement over previous Marvel films. Kurt Russell was great as the villain, but then I expected nothing less from him.

>>
>>86504172
You need to establish someone actually filling a paternal role for this to work. Making Yondu hesitant to kill Peter or willing to overlook his transgressions is not sufficient.

Think Long John Silver. That's a character who's established repeatedly as being fond and protective of Jim Hawkins. Someone who teaches him things and looks after him. who Yondu is just some space pirate who has decided he won't straight up kill Peter because of some mostly unstated past they share.

A lot of this is just the format of the movies. You don't see Peter growing up with Yondu. You don't see him showing Peter the ropes, teaching him to fly a ship or to shoot. The only thing you see of Peter's past is him visiting his mother at the hospital. Then you immediately cut to him as an adult and the first crew you see him join is the Guardians. His relationship with Yondu is distant and pretty much irrelevant to his character at this point.

If Vol. 2 wanted to push this surrogate father thing, they should have dedicated a lot more screentime to Peter's past. But they don't. They don't even have them on screen together until the very end of the movie. And then, it's all just one big fight scene, so there isn't really any time for them to interact meaningfully.

Its weird how the two Guardians movies get graded. Personally i found the first to be rather mediocre while the second had the film finding much more of its own voice instead of being another cookie-cutter MCU project.

But people seem to grade the first higher than it deserves because it *wasn't as bad as they expected* which is weird to me, I don't get how someone could go into a, say, 6 movie expecting it to be a 4 so they therefore give it an 8. No, its still a 6.

Meanwhile, the success of the first set expectations of the second very high, and when the sequel didn't live up to those expectations it causes folks to underscore. They went to see an 8 movie expecting a 10 so score it a 6. Same as above, its just as wrong a way of thinking but in the opposite direction.

Diff'rent strokes. People kept going to the bland Wondy movie and the trainwreck of a Skwad film so whatever floats your boat.

No bullshit, zunes were the superior mp3 player than the ipods. Built sturdy as hell, and a big bonus was not having to deal with the godawful itunes app.

Ugly little buggers tho, and MS tried to make them "hip" by deliberately making them boxy with ugly colors to differentiate from the white, rounded apple products. I liked their counter-culture flavor but most folks did not. At all.

(ref, had to support dozens of both items as part of a conferencing/educational system back in the day. ipods were flimsy, broke if you looked at them funny. I knew people who tried to break their zunes in order to get an ipod and they failed in the attempt)

It's shit.
Nothing happens the whole movie until the very end.
First one had adventure and everyone's gimmicks weren't pushed to extremes in the sequel.
Yondu kept threatening to kill Quill in the first but in the sequel all of sudden Ego is part of Quill's life and he tries to be a father figure.
It was forced and all of a sudden I'm supposed to care when he kept treating him life shit?
Fuck no.
Rocket spent too hard being insufferable instead of just being a prick, like he went out of his way.
Drax turned into a retard and Baby Groot is the worst offender.
First Groot didn't bother me and I thought he was funny with his naive behavior.
Oh Baby Groot, so cute, much random.
Peter didn't do anything.
He had fight scenes and flying around, had an adventure the whole first movie.
Instead he talks all movie in the sequel until he gets super powers.
Everyone being split up bonding with one another caused the movie to suffer.
I get the theme is family, but I didn't feel it worked.

Too many jokes. The dialogue and plot couldn't breath from all the damn jokes.

Too many songs. I felt like I was watching a commercial for a NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL 70's ROCK Cd or some shit. CUT IT OUT.

Too many sappy pay offs in the ending. The Father/son/daddy conflict was enough. Seriously. That was the core of the movie. Having the sister conflict, the racoon identifying with the daddy conflict, Drax getting laid conflict, groot being overly moe conflict, and the goddamn fucking funeral.

TOO MUCH.

It also kind of looked like a skittles commercial.

Idk, the first one isn't a classic. It was a little different because it had some memorable scenes and refreshing characters, but the ending was a joke.

Typical Disney Teen marvel movie.
>>
>>86485602
The use of synth in rock music came about in the 70's which is when that song game out. Not sure about the dates but there probably was some early 80's music in there. I find it weird Peter only cares about music from the 70's when he grew up in the 80's and was abducted in 89. Yeah I know his mom liked music from then but he must have had his own likes from the decade he grew up in.
>>
>>86508298

>>86508298

>>86508338
I love the first, the music integrated flawlessly into it with the walkman. Here it was just playing and was only occasionally linked to the device. Not to mention the songs used were really underwhelming.

The funeral was really great and Drax's part was fine, I didn't get the feeling they will hook up with Mantis.
The sister conflict had to happen otherwise Gamora wouldn't even need to be in the movie.
>>
>>86508447
He was still an impressionable child that hadn't developed his own preferences yet and his mom, his sole guardian, cared a lot about the music.
Makes sense to me.

When I was around that age I just listened to what ever my big brother listened to.
>>

She's in the movie because she's part of the crew, not because her sister wants to kill her. If the sister wasn't there, she'd still be playing the untrusting companion who uncovers Ego's secret.

Shit taste, opinion disregarded. Vol 1 is just hit singles with little to no meaning. Vol 2 has more mature songs with meaningful themes that correlate with the emotions in the movie. Personally, I do enjoy the fact that it wasn't another cookie cutter Marvel film, neither was one. One has a generally coherent tone and plot and, as an original film, it did a great job of establishing characters and a universe in a well paced manner. The only real let down was the end which diminished the overall villain and his threat making the suspense that had been built seem false. Although, at the time, the "lol random" forced joke did actually feel OK with me but, in hindsight, they could have done loads more to establish a "you're not a human" vibe and draw intrigue for a sequel.

Two was badly paced. Severely so. It had some great moments in it and some characters were well developed. Ego was not and, as Marvel often struggle to do, this lack of a villain that we can take seriously undermined the whole premise of the film. Ego, an all powerful being who has planned for the events of the film and gets trumped by his son so easily it makes him seem weak and pathetic OR makes his son seem ridiculously overpowered - even the "if I die you lose your god-powers" was an extremely lazy way of ending the film. It was too rushed and characters became caricatures of themselves in the reddit-tier Deadpool fashion (lol blaming Reddit humour makes your argument seem weak - lowest common denominator "he said some bad words and did questionable things this is amazing" is what has been aimed for in the two aforementioned films and G2 deserved a lot better than that)
