ASOIAF and the TV show GoT are simply polar opposites. You might be fooled into thinking that since the plot events are similar this adaption is semi-faithful. In truth, it does everything ASOIAF religiously avoids and does nothing that makes ASOIAF great. ASOIAF is about the nuances found in characters. Each character has so many shades and each trait is motivated and built up somehow. Even the ones all good or all evil are interesting to read about because GRRM emphasizes those aspects and makes characters stand in stark contrast to each other. You care about Robb Stark because he is the embodiment of Northern honor and justice. You don’t care about show Robb because his traits are changing by the episode and he goes from X to Y depending on what the showrunners feel is good Television.

To call GoT an adaption would be an insult to actual adaptions. It is more fanfic than an adaption. It has fallen into every trapping the books set out to avoid and without even noticing it. While the books are very tragic with many characters suffering a horrible fate, the books are never nihilistic. The show is nihilistic. People die, five minutes later nobody cares. Maybe someone died because another person needed that as a plot device to go somewhere else. Or maybe someone else died because the showrunners got tired of the actor. But that’s about the depth of “tragedy” in GoT. It exists as shock factor and the consequences of death are forgotten in favor of lazy plot points.

GoT has now devolved into standard fantasy affair with none of the tragedy, humor and character bonds that make the books great. By removing those aspects and instead favorizing social media-favorite characters, the showrunners not only miss the mark on ASOIAF but also indirectly creates its polar opposite that inhabits all the clichés the source material avoids.

Hound is way too old for his role, he's a good actor but his casting aged the character up by 20 years, he looks like he's pushing 50 when the character is less than 30.
