It was more or less because the North had industrial growth and infrastructure. The South had farming and that was pretty much it. The North could afford to give up slavery, and if inventions like the cotton gin hadn't been invented, the South would have abandoned slavery long before and tried to modernize in other ways.

Which just goes to show one undeniable truth: New technologies and more education improve the opportunities for wealth for everybody. The South chose to hang on to a dying system because they didn't want to change and their economy and people suffered for it.
