Historyfags of /tv/, what are some of the most historically accurate films ever made? Please note that I'm not necessarily asking for good films, but ones that are just very, very accurate and visually authentic when it comes to the time period and people they are representing.
The first one that comes to mind for me is Gettysburg. While its certainly a tedious film, the fact amount of extras used and the fact that they were allowed to film the battle on the ACTUAL Gettysburg battlefield reaches an unbelievable level of authenticity.
Also that opening theme, holy shit

Alexander Revisited
Underrated movie, I really enjoyed when I watched it last. I feel though you lose some of the appeal when you're not too familiar with the story of Alexander.
They're home to probably the most authentic ancient battle scenes on the screen. Gaugamela is a masterpiece.
>>86413761
>film the battle on the ACTUAL Gettysburg battlefield
I've never heard of this movies, is this actually true? If so its kind of unprecedented in terms of filmmaking
>>86414151
This
Alexander isn't a great film by any means but this movie really does capture his mindset as it was chronicled by ancient historians.

Some it was and some wasn't. The actual battle site is a motley mix of preserved farms and memorials to the dead. The sections depicting the battles of Devil's den and the fight at Little Round Top were filmed on the exact site, where Pickett's Charge was filmed at a nearby farm because a memorial would've been in shot at the actual site.

Fuck that's awesome. I'm Polish so I've never seen it.

>>86415376
Actually no, they were late period Neo-Maya according to Gibson and the writers. The language they speak is also Maya.
That was one of the "it aint accurate complaints" that was leveled by Mexicans when the film came out, but there dumbasses never realized it wasn't about the Aztecs anyway.

Nah...the costumes are accurate as is the portrayal of the complex relationship between Christians and Muslims in the Crusader States, but other than that its sort of not.
The choreography is fantasy and the real story of Balian of Ibelin doesn't resemble that of Orlando Blooms in the slightest.

Not a film, but HBO Rome.
While the story itself is fictitious, the costumes, cultural references, military doctrine, political organisation, religious observances and customs are as authentic as can be, given our current knowledge.

Battle of Vienna 1683 was pretty good even if the CGI was lacking.
"Caligula" from 1979 was very good as well, lots of graphic sex with men sucking each other off and shit though, but you might be into that OP.

alexander is no greek
>>86417038
>>86414151
Alexander is very good for military accuracy and the behaviour of the Macedonian Greeks.
I especially loved how they used English actors for the Greeks and Irish actors to portray the Macedonians (classical historyfags will note that the Macedonian dialect of Koine Greek was considered "barbaric" by their southern counterparts). So much hidden detail.

I think it was during Phillip's reign that the Macedonians really started to get acknowledged as "fellow Greeks" if you can call it that, mainly by being invited to the Olympics, if I remember right.
>>86417068
The north of Italy was very Gallic, genetically speaking. In fact, many civilisations of the ancient world had experienced Gallic incursions at some stage; i.e. Galatia/Liguria/Venetia etc.) so it's entirely plausible to have legionaries/Romans of Gallic origin in the Republic at this time.
Kind of not accurate as there was no "Christmas Court" like the movie portrays but has excellent acting, costumes, and portrays the political situation of Henry II's sons perfectly.
>>86417179
Barry Lyndon was pretty decent historic fiction. Ryan O'Neal is among one of the worst actors to ever exist but his blackness works out with his character

Why isn't it? It goes way more in debt than most historical movies. I feel like it didn't hit with the audience because frankly, the majority of audience aren't interested in history. But if you wish to point out some flaws of the movie, please do.
>>86418181
OP here, I actually used to live in Fredericksburg. Its a pretty town, but unfortunately little to none of the original battlefield is intact. Only a few portions of the old stone wall still stand.

>most devoted christians are bad guys
>most devoted muslims are a bit naive (or too much faith in Allah) but still good guys
>most characters with atheistic beliefs are good guys
Too much modern political motives placed in the film, including the inaccurate portrayal of events and characters' actions. Still a great movie though.
>>86418202
I (and a lot of critics) find some of the acting kind of laughable. And the pacing kind of sucks too. There's a guy a youtube who reviews historical films and he brought up an excellent point regarding the matter.
Say for example you've never read any history of Alexander and want to watch the movie. During the opening scene where he plans Gaugamela he mentions all of his commanding officers (Perdicas, Ptolemy, Parmenion, Antigones) by name. If you were watching that scene for the first time you have literally NO CLUE who those people are and what there significance is to history. Not only that but you only get to here their names like once, and are expected by the film to just suddenly memorize there faces for future reference.
If you aren't into history the film require a fucking guide book to understand, and I don't think it should when better writing could help it.

>>86418604
Accuracy is like a 7/10 for that one. They got some of the motivations and geography wrong but its forgivable.
As a film though its a solid 10/10
>>86418592
oh that's fantastic
>>86418592
this must be dangerous for the extras
the elephant might think he's in a real battle and get spooked
I remember they had that "dying elephant" after the battle of thapsus in rome
>>86418462
I find the pacing a bit like history, some things are slow and "boring" and others are exciting and filled with turning points. That's something I like about the movie actually. Idk about the acting, perhaps the actor portraying Alexander was a bit too dramatic and passionate, but I don't mind that either since a guy who has to convince his men to take on the world would have to be passionate as fuck.
Also,
>implying there's anything bad with having people to actually read some history in order to further enjoy a film about history
>>86418537
Yeah but how else are you suppose to introduce new people to Greek history if its that fucking dense.
The problem isn't even that its dense, its that it has no fucking need to be. All Stone had to do was write in a few lines here in there were Alexander basically says "Hi Antigones" to remind the audience their names and roles.
>>86417830
Off topic shitposting is what keeps /tv/ threads alive though. Not enough effort posters like me to go around, need shit posts and politics to fill out the ecosystem. I've come to enjoy that stuff and think the mods are a bit too quick to shitcan threads that go political. I'll be writing a long post to clarify someone's understanding of an issue, finish it and try to post and the thread's gone. Bums me out

>>86418716
To this day I've never found out how they did it. I tried looking on the DVD extras but they don't go in depth that much. Which is a shame
There's even a shot with multiple elephants running in the background I'm pretty sure its not CGI, which means these fuckers got like 6 elephants for this movie.
