Is he the ultimate pleb filter? I mean anytime someone criticizes him for having happy endings, you can discard every other thought they've had on film.

I believe that everyone has an "edgy anti-Spielberg phase" when they are like 15-20 but then when they get to 21 or older they start to realize that, yes, Spielberg has made some pretty amazing movies. Even his not-amazing movies, like Lincoln or Tintin are worth looking at.

AIs ending was rather bittersweet if not outright sad.
Plebs love Spielberg too, though, so no. He's an excellent contrarian filter, though.

I love Spielberg, even The Lost World was a good movie to me. But Christ, War of the Worlds is overrated on this board.

This whole idea that giving your movie a sad ending automatically makes it more sophisticated and highbrow needs to die
I don't like his newer stuff but I don't understand how anyone could actually hate Indiana Jones, Jaws, Jurassic Park, etc., why can't we get good blockbusters these days with all the people who imitate him?

>Is he the ultimate pleb filter?
Of course. He's the de facto pleb filter.
If somebody lists a spielberg flick as one of their favorites you can instantly recognize them as a pleb.

Nobody imitates speilberg. Columbus was the closest and in some respects I think better a director for flickino

Part of ascending from plebhood is realizing not only what makes Spielberg bad, but also makes him great.

>that image
proving OP right I see

>Columbus was the closest and in some respects I think better a director for flickino
just not true.

This.
"Whoah....that was sad!!! This totally gave me feels! That means it's completely deep and smart and stuff"
Honestly retards. All of Spielberg's films that have "Happy endings" end like that because it's in line with the one of the film.
The ending of Last Crusade where Indi, his dad and his pals ride off into the sunset on horseback is fitting to the tone established in that film.
It wouldn't have been smarter in any way if Indi was diagnosed prostate cancer and there was a montage sequence of his body deteriorating until he withered and died.

He's a great director but he's made a lot of mediocre movies as well.

It is. The extended versions of hp 1 2 are tighter than any of speilbergs flicks
