I don't think he's been treated poorly, really. Even in the books he's clearly just someone who stirs the pot to see what happens next and if he can take advantage of it, he's not some epic ninety-seven dimensional chess wizard with a master plot leading the throne. He's an opportunist and eventually his Jenga approach to strategy is going to fuck him in the ass.

That being said, both Selyse and Shireen Baratheon went a long way off script.

They almost forgot about Gendry as well but it seems His Gurmness might have told them that Edric Storm has an important role to play so they need to get his show expy back into play.

All of the supposed military genius leaders of the show seem to not know about pickets or scouts, which is dumb.
