I feel like Ridley has no idea or just forgot what made the original ALIEN so interesting. For example, I kind of liked how the original Space Jockey seemed to be some kind of cybernetic organism that was fused to its control station. I thought that made for some interesting possibilities on how their species developed and functioned.

If they had to expand on this setting, it might've been interesting for some human explorers to come across a large orbital structure where we could see more of these things either fused to more control stations or silently stalking around and cultivating xeno eggs. There wouldn't have to be a lot of monsters or jump scares, just humans walking around vast dark alien halls and tunnels and the Jockeys obliviously doing things beyond our logic for reasons we'll never fully understand. What was their relationship with the xenomorphs? Did they create them to be weapons or tools or were they just an experimental life form? Or maybe something else entirely that has no human analogue? Maybe they didn't create them at all.

The way Ridley made it so the Jockeys turned out to be "engineers" who looked more like humans instead of giant elephant-like creatures, and even created humans while David was able to decipher their language, fly their ships and even replicate their xenomorph experiments all felt too convenient and lacked a lot of the mystery of the original movie. Where before we were just a minor species that happened to stumble by freak accident on something we shouldn't have, now we're suddenly the star creation of the engineers who'd actually been looking for us with very clear but asinine and not particularly interesting or compelling motivations.

I was disappointed. Narcissistic robots with god complexes are interesting, just not as interesting as what could've been.

As to prometheus and covenant, I really think they should have offered more than just one explanation as to what the Derelict ship was all about.

It just seems like they took the easiest road by branding the Xenomorphs the "Engineers" Bio-Weapon. Incidentally that is precisely what humans have tried use them for ever since they stumbled upon them. So the big fucking secret, the payoff for all that mystery is that they were Bio-Weapons all along? Whee.

Why not offer three seperate explanations without ever resolving any of them? It gives you a reason to flesh out three scientific characters instead of a crew of forgettable married couples. There is plenty of conflict to be had within the group with these characters as they face the Xenomorph threat. You could even explore the different conclusions and predictions for Xenomorph behavior these individuals would draw and still have all of them die because Xenomorphs are all about adaptation.

So? I agreed with him stating that it would have been way more interesting to explore the mystery of the alien origin. This does in no way mean "Show and tell us explicitly how and why the aliens were created.". What I got from Prometheus is that the black goo is some sort of "radical life". It interacts with anything that is biologically advanced enough to decrease its entropy over time. The black goo breaks up the biological/genetical structure of the lifeform much like a radical atom would break up the structure of molecules. The result is an extremely aggressive, short-lived lifeform.

The next logical step would be to condense the radicality and aggression of this "black goo" and render it stable. That's where you get the Xenomorph. One better way to explain the Xenomorph RIGHT THERE.

In the first, it exists to alter DNA. The second, it's as you said. All is fine to a point but it contradicts itself with the spores. That doesn't mesh with what David says about it only feeding on meat and mammals.

In Prometheus, we get the engineer dissolving and seeding Earth. We get David infecting Holloway, which creates the facehugger in Shaw, which creates the Deacon. That's it. We don't see how the thing that got Fiefield came to be.

Then there are inexplicable spores which kick off the new bursters.
