I suppose they COULD be biding time for deeper in the winter season, when men's supplies and stamina are lower; makes for an easier fight. Until then, they just do sweeps north of the Wall to accrue soldiers.

But it's probably just due to plot molasses. They were right on Bran at the Raven's cave, yet a girl & a cripple made it to the Wall seven episodes before the dead will. All while everyone else traverses thousands of miles over five minutes of showtime.
