He went to get Gendry out of King's Landing because the city could eventually get caught in an attack if Dany decides she has to seige the city to end the war, if Cersei doesn't surrender. Davos just wanting him to come with him to the North as a smith for Jon but Gendry decided he wanted to go with Jon beyond the wall, to the shock of Davos who was visibly surprised when he said he wanted to go with Jon
