How could you not, in either form? Alex Murphy is a very endearing character, down to him doing the spinning gun trick for his son. Seeing him get mowed down is tragic and uncomfortable. When he's reborn as robo, this uncomfortableness continues since we wake up "with" him, right through his eyes. It has the effect of sleep paralysis. seeing him as a simple robot tool, and slowly reemerging to claim his identity feels so triumphant, cathartic even.
The whole film hinges on Murphy, right down to his name being the last line.

Over the years I've seen the perception change. Now it's generally agreed that it's pure kino. One of the high points of 1980s cinema.

It's not. It's 100x better than R3 but it's trash compared to the first one.
It's basically what the critics thought the first one was (and Verhoven when he first read through the script before his heroic wife told him to read it again), a dumb action movie with a childish premise.

Robocop 2 is better than Empire Strikes Back. I'm not even kidding, all of you faggots get too caught up on "muh cartoon characters!" or "how come Robocop is dumb again??"that you completely miss the point.

Alright, I'm going to give RoboCop 2 another watch.
BTW, a friend of mine came back from holiday with a pirate version of RoboCop2. The neck break scene was longer than in any other version I've seen. Like it had 3 twists instead of 2 (or however many there are). Anyone got this version?
