>transporting
Ok makes sense
>replicate stuff
Ok thats fine
>warp
Kind of makes sense
>universal translator
Ok no
I know it is a necessary plot crutch but come on
Also plot crutch general
Do you seriously care about that? That the characters can speak to each other and understand what they're saying?
Was Hoshi's role in ENT that much better than just shrugging and goin' "Eh, alright?"
Universal translator is fine, it's projecting holograms over everyone's eyes and mouths all the time, whatever, but the real thing that sticks in my craw is ansibles. Those are complete bullshit.

>universal translator
My favorite example of this is in the hitchhiker's guide franchise, if you're going to have something like this it might as well be something as absurd as a fish you stick in your ear.

I care because transporting, replicating, warping, phasers vs projectiles all have problems. Subspace interferance, dilithium leaks, warp 10. It is forgotten as a technology and assumed as never malfunctioning.
Meet a godbeing? It works. Teleported 75k light years? Works fine. Emp? Still works. No power source, no malfunctions. How does a talaxian make baseball references? Why didnt it work on breen?

HAHAHAHAHA I watched that movie too
>>86306564
I should specify im a huge fan and dont mean to antagonize. Does anyone have examples of plots surrounding or any instance of a translator malfunction outside of ENT? Does spock and tuvok speak english? Is picard speaking french? Or chekhov russian?

Ive seen all twice now. I can think of a time in voy when a space cloud messed up their coms but thays not the same. How did you even glean that from my post?

>he thinks i said transporter malfunction
>american literacy
>>86306959
You're right, I messed up. I apologize.
Try the episode Sanctuary in DS9.

Thank you! I knew i missed something. At least now my biting lack of immersion can be quenched.

>ansibles
in trek universe all communication travels at warp 10 because it has no mass, and can go that fast, so its instantaneous.
>>86307412
and ripping the space-time continuum to shreds every time
shameful
>>86307412
>in trek universe all communication travels at warp 10 because it has no mass, and can go that fast, so its instantaneous.
Nope.
Voyager would be able to contact home in season 1, if this was the case.

What always bothers me is how even with universal translators people say things in their own language that don't get translated, especially with klingons. Is there an official explanation for this?
>>86307670
maybe you can toggle people hearing it translated on and off by wiggling your ears slightly.
>>86307670
sometimes i say et cetera instead of and so on
>>86307912
But with a translator it would just translate the latin.
I shouldnt be able to cheers qapla or call people amigo.
>>86307412
>he thinks subspace transmissions are instantaneous
Holy shit
>>86308002
gairaigo exist in every language and using the original form (or even a munged version) carries meaning in and of itself
