Netflix on course to lose over 50% of stock price; customers

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

>Netflix shares fell only five percentage points this past week, even as the company’s key vulnerability was laid bare for investors—twice. Walt Disney, a vital source of Netflix content, said it will pull Disney and Pixar movies and shows after next year to start its own streaming service. And Facebook launched a video service with niche shows covering sports, cooking, reality contests, social-media celebrities, and more. For now, it’s far from a threat to the runaway leader in subscription streaming, but then, when Netflix was founded 20 years ago this month, it was far from a threat to Blockbuster.

>One of the all-time great story stocks, Netflix (ticker: NFLX) has a plot flaw, one that could cut its share price by more than half by the end of the decade. It is chiefly a hit-renter, not a hit-owner. Even among the expanding universe of Netflix Originals, top performers like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black, which have both run for five seasons, are licensed, not owned. There is only one example of an owned Netflix hit reaching a second season—Stranger Things, which returns in October.

>There are two ways to accumulate owned hits: Make them or buy them. Both require copious amounts of cash, and Netflix is running low. This year, it expects to burn through $2 billion to $2.5 billion. That’s a remarkable acceleration from the $1.7 billion last year and just over $900 million the year before. For now, it is financing this spending with junk-rated debt. But its long-term debt stands at $4.8 billion.

Why are you still a Netflix customer?

Fucking hell, that's damning

What's worse though is that Netflix customers will pay it. They're an odd breed, happy to suffer severe cuts in the catalog and then paying more for the '''''''''''''''''''''''privilege'''''''''''''''''''''''.

Netflix went too far up their own ass with the original shows and forgot why people like Netflix to begin with.

Back in like 2013 Netflix had about 9000 titles (movies and TV shows). Now they're down to about 5000. They've been spending huge amounts on original programming, and as a result letting their overall catalogue collapse.

People like Netflix because it lets them watch a wide variety of movies and TV shows. People like binging TV shows and exploring new movies. Adding 30-some original shows at the cost of scrapping 4000 titles overall doesn't benefit Netflix, especially when most of their original shows aren't that good.

Now they're strapped with debt and there's nothing good to watch on Netflix that I haven't already seen.

Defenders is apparently dogshit.

If I want to watch something that isnt on there I just go find it on some free streaming site in 1080p, or find a torrent.

People bitch about how netlifx is shitty, but I like being able to just go lay on the couch and watch some TNG any time I want.

But that's not the problem being solved. Cable at least categorized by genre per channel typically. If I wanted a Sci-fi channel the problem was I'd likely get locked into a high price base package then have to pay even more for that channel.

With the streaming alternative, I can't buy a "Sci-fi streaming service". If I love Sci-fi I have to subscribe to Netflix, Disney, Hulu, HBO, etc, etc to get all the sci-fi shows being made.

NOTHING was fixed, at least when Netflix ruled the roost they got the majority of a genres releases so that one service was enough and offset cable nicely.

But i'm not.

As a german the library is very, very limited to begin with, due to licensing, and since theres many more established streaming services in germany they and netflix constantly buy up each others exclusive streaming rights. For example: House of Cards existed before Netflix came to germany, Sky (streaming service) bought 6 months exclusive streaming rights for House of cards before then, so you can't actually watch house of cards, a netflix series ON netflix here until 6 months after season release.

Another thing is that there's pretty much no good movies left and the only things you can watch are the equivalent of fucking weeb shovel ware in the gaming medium.

Netflix is shit.
Oh yeah, i forgot to mention the mass produced Netflix originals that have truly become quantity over quality.
>>
Cannibalism. When Netflix came out it was a singular place you could go for just about any movie. When it went digital it still had a pretty impressive library for streaming and lots of well-known shows and big movies. Then a million streaming services pop up, exclusive rights becoming a thing, streaming becomes fragmented and the sole appeal of the format evaporates.

HBO wants its own streaming service. Disney wants its own streaming service. Prime's selection is worse than Netflix, Hulu has ads on top of its microscopic library, and all Netflix has left after its 'original content' gambit is a bunch of knock-off "originals", foreign films no one has ever heard of (often for good reason), B-grades, and fucking anime.

Shows and movies are all strewn across separate services. No one wants to pay a monthly sub one show they like to keep up with or one movie they want to see. The result? Congratulations, you've made piracy the new 2014-era Netflix. It's the only forum that has all your favorites in your place.

They fucked themselves.

It's odd to think that we're going to end up with a load of smaller specialist stream providers like Disney rather than aggregators. Who would pay for an exclusively Disney/Pixar service? They only produce so many movies a year.

Yeah, leftist are fucking cucks.

Are those industry faggots fucking serious. As we as paying more we're also gonna have to pay for more streaming services?
Back to pirating I go then
>>
>>86268273
Downloads and illegal streams, definitely. I watch college football, and if I wanted to watch all the games I watch legally, I'd have to subscribe to a whole load of division streams (and in some cases, university streams). It'd cost me over 1000 a year for a season that is a few months long.

I don't know what the people making these calls are smoking, but honestly - if they managed to kill off streams, I wouldn't pay 1000, I'd just stop watching. The good folks at Disney and Netflix may soon find I'm not alone in that attitude.
>>
>>86275612
Since Disney owns all the content they'll be providing, they can charge much less not that they willand still make a lot of profit.

I pay 45 for 6 months of a streaming service that houses mostly everything under one roof.
Netflix needs a GOT or breaking bad show. they need to have better filters on quality control. All those awful new stands up are killing me.

I envy murricans and their extensive Netflix library, yuropoor gets maybe 1/100th of the catalog on offer.

Netflix then:
>You enjoyed that? Maybe we could recommend you watch other movies or TV shows from the same writer, same director, featuring the same actors, or just with similar themes or genres!

Netflix now:
>You enjoyed that? Maybe we could recommend you watch House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or Daredevil!

Has anyone else noticed this change or am I crazy? I feel like they had a very robust algorithm a few years ago and they just trashed it.

It never worked in the UK, because there's about 12 movies here.

People praise Netflix for funding every script that comes their way, they think it's courageous and sets a standard for the entire industry.
Now that competition is getting stronger, they'll have to restrict what gets funded thus becoming just like any other media company.

You mean "they greenlit every script brought to them that involved darkies"

I mean for fuck's sake they spent $120 million on this

One Hundred Twenty Million Dollars

is there any reason not to pirate anymore?

No I'm just terribly misinformed and was a sheltered kid. I barely even went to blockbuster as a kid, no way would I know of anything else. Until McDonalds started putting N64s in their locations I didn't even know what Nintendo was.
>>
>>86276220
This series was crap. It was greenlit because it had Baz Luhrmann pushing it. Sorry but the white Australian known for things like Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge, and Romeo & Juliet was the wrong person to make this story.

I guess we need more Amy Schumer shows!

debt is only okay/possibly good if your company is stable

a company whose market share is steadily decreasing should definitely not take on debt

What? How is that possible when the first season of Marco Polo cost them 90 million? They must have wasted 80% of the money, holy shit.

I would actually be interested in a list of all of Netflix failure, it will paint a clear picture of where they went wrong.

A company whose market share is steadily decreasing might as well take on debt as long as it fuels a plan for recovery. That said, the people buying that debt may not be the brightest bulbs in the package.

>>
>>86275971
Oh they've absolutely made this change. I understand why they did it. They spent so much damn money on their own shows they need to promote them at every opportunity they have. But I miss when Netflix recommendations were actually good movies/shows based on your own taste.

The vast majority of Netflix catalogue is pure garbage, including alot of its original series. I can ignore 10 bucks a month, but anymore and people will start to pay attention.

Why don't studios have there own netflix services with their movies on them btw???
>>
>>86277487
Agree with this - it's not like Netflix is expensive, but if there's literally nothing worth watching there's no point in paying for it.
>>
>>86277487
Because people binge watch and you need a vast catalog of content for it to be worth it
