It's because your brain can conceptualize a monkey as a real thing - so It's easier for CGI artists to design it. Doomsday is purely imagined - so u have to imagine every detail rather than have a real life thing as a model to copy.

This is the psychology I believe. We all have seen monkeys so know how they should look so our brain makes us believe we are actually seeing a monkey whereas trying to CGI some monster that doesn't exist; our brain's know we are being fooled

The apes are the stars of the show. Doomsday was a bad idea slapped together for the last 10 minutes of a movie.

Its because he has a beard that it looks better. It covers the bottom half of his face. Thats important because one of the biggest causes of the uncanny valley is that humans are social animals that rely heavily on non-vocal communication. The vaguest twitch of a facial muscle is the difference between you thinking someone is sincere or lying. It's really hard to animate all those little things because most of them you only notice on a subconscious level.
Mocap/facial cap helps this a lot by giving an actual frame of reference, but the human brain is still really good at identifying the tiniest discrepancies and sending a warning signal to your brain that "This fucking thing isn't a people! Smash it with a fucking rock or run away!"

Doomsday cgi is great, its just that Snyder doesn't try to make it realistic, the montage, s/b fight and the final fight are supposed to look dreamy, like 300.
