Why does this happen so often? Making the mother the crazy one reduces the tension to zero and the movie becomes a bore. This happens in tons of horror movies...They usually start off good then lose so much steam by the end. Are there any horror films that actually get better as they progress?

I think the film would have been scarier if they made it look like the Mother was sane and the Monster was just manipulating things so other people would not protect her. Also, that horrible stock sound effect during the fight was entirely out of place.
