The comedy is extremely formulaic, the show also preaches with a condescending attitude meant only to jerk off its overwhelmingly liberal audience.
Remember that scene in Avengers when Cap says "There's only one God"? R&M is that level of cringe but for atheists.

It's hit-or-miss. I can't think of more than 3 episodes where both the A and B plots are good. Like Community, Season 1 was consistently good, Season 2 was hit-or-miss but had a couple great episodes, and Season 3 will be the last hurrah. After this it will turn to shit.

The bad episodes and cringey bad though (Interdimensional cable, Schwifty, Mr. Poopybutthole). Nearly unwatchable a second time.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Rick and Morty when it's being a sci-fi comedy. When it tries to be "deep" or "nihilistic", that's when the cringe comes because it handles those subjects so poorly.

Too much emphasis on edge, dark humor and shock value rather than good writing so it's appeal is limited and short lived. I got into it and thought it was pretty funny for about 2 months, then I just got tired of it because I realized there was no reason to ever re watch it. Rick and Morty is to Futurama as a paper towel is to a regular towel.
>>
Holy shit guys, don't cut yourselves on all that edge.

RnM is literally the best western animation ever, and one of the best animations world wide. Could it be a lot better? Of course. Is it cringy as fuck at times? Yes. Is there a less cringy animation? Absolutely not.

It's okay to like something that reddit/9gag likes guys. Just tell yourself that you appreciate and understand it better, if you want to satisfy your egos.

Or read a book if you want real art, tv is generally shit, RnM is just the least shit.

On /tv/, Reddit is perceived as a bunch of naive tools who believe that being a nerd is cool. As a result, they're childishly enthusiastic about their hobbies (which they've only barely scratched the surface of), find random humor completely hilarious, and are notoriously pedantic. This is due to the fact that they believe that nerds are some kind of "cultural elite" simply because their interests aren't completely mainstream.

BUT, since they don't see themselves as particularly alienated by society, they haven't developed the pleb/patrician paradigm, unlike 4chan. Consequentially, they also have the prudish, politically-correct mentality that goes with the delusion that they can still be normal members of society and accepted by potentially anyone, or that they have moral standards to uphold. This makes them very prone to being shocked or amused by the cheapest transgressions and subversions.

>>
>>86225974
Yes, I meant a successful animated comedy. But the animation itself is not bad either, although I don't think I really have an eye for that sort of thing, so I don't really care.

And I could agree with Simpsons beating it, because it has grace that shows like Family guy lack, and do an awful parody of. RnM's parody isn't awful tho. It's just the right amount of exaggaration, and even when it's completely overboard, it makes the viewer uncomfortable. Not like Family guy or some other shit, whish is plain boring and cringy with randomness and exaggaration.

>season 3 has completely given up on the A plot/B plot structure in favour of a plot
>move away from monster of the week/non ordered episodes towards a series you have to watch in order to understand the current state of the family
>edginess has been upped to an uncomfortable degree, like when rick talks to the one rat "i could have given you an identifier like scar but then you would be different from the rest of the hordes of you i kill man am i cool" was cringey as fuck
>the writers think it was clever (not just kind of silly or fun, but a legitimately clever way to get across the feeling) to have rick go on a needless murder spree while the family sits through a mindlessly boring therapy session

It's okay guys. To admit that show has flaws but is still good. You can probably dissect any piece of art/entertainment and argue it's shit because of it.

You guys all have your cringe detectors turned up too many notches. It's a comedy. I believe some of the writing is pretty smart without getting up its own ass; something that is hard to balance. I may not be a professor at Harvard but I have read almost every big existential thinker out there(Sartre, Camus, Dostoyevsky, Neitzche, etc). I think they do a fine job of creating the "angsty" mood that comes with nihilistic thinking. Of course not much is said of what to do in response to this feeling but that is because the characters are experiencing it due to their circumstances. They don't know how to deal with the trivialization of their meaning.

The art style is not graceful but the animation is pretty smooth in complex movements like the fight scenes. I don't think the show would work if it looked much better, but the movents look and are designed far better than in Groening animations. Again it's a cartoon, it's not meant to be a grand spectacle. Yes that is an argument. It is absolutely fine to focus on one part of a product and simplify others to suit its function.

It can be preachy but I think that is part of its charm. It brings things up that are usually kicked under the rug. Today's culture can fixate on entertainment. I have a hard time with a lot of friends because they are so driven by humor that I can't have a single serious conversation. The packaging of these admittedly obvious issues in a popular comedy is a nice segue into more stimulating discussion.

Even if all that is bullshit, call me a faggot but I actually laugh watching it.

Since we are all talking about the new episode anyway, during the last bit of the therapy session the therapist says "Some people are okay with going to work, and others would rather die. It's up to you." What does she mean is "up to you"? Whether you die or go to work, or whether you are okay with going to work or bring someone who would rather die?

Because if it's the latter then I have a feeling that I disagree. I can not do a lot of things but I think I do what is best for me that is within my ability considering my situation. I would be better at piano if I practiced longer but I'm not good enough yet to enjoy practice for long periods. Because of this I accept the fact I will be learning at a less efficient rate than possible. This is all to say that I do not necessarily choose how long I practice( work) but that it is my situation that influences my decision.

How could I take responsibility for my lack of skill when my circumstance determines it? I wouldn't say that I am responsible for my amazing guitar technique. I enjoyed learning, but that wasn't up to me. I just did it every day for a decade because I was compelled to. Just as I could be compelled to the streets to avoid labor. Even against my better judgement.

It's slowly turned into primarily Dan Harmon's project. He's been known to do this when writing for shows, where he'll slowly try to take over and spearhead the show's progression and style. I legitimately cannot stand this fat fuck, and his "woe is me, life is so hard as a writer" bullshit. I even tried watching the documentary about him to see if it would change my perspective a bit, and it just made me hate him even more. The fact is you have to rerepresent the show as something with nothing but toilet humor because you know if you honestly judged it you wouldn't be able to hold your contrarian position. Can you honestly not read a few paragraphs? I'm just trying to be specific enough to get a real debate going. You all say it has elementary philosophy but you have yet to say what that even is or what would constitute something more worthy of your oh so perfect tastes. How can you guys even begin to say you have the refined taste when you can't even have a proper discussion on why you like or dislike a particular show. You literally just check how many upvotes a show has on Reddit and if it exceeds "x" amount you cross it off your list, make a bunch of garbage ironic memes, and flame anyone who has a sincere opinion about something they like. Explain to me how that is good taste and not insecurity.

can we talk about how the episode was fucking horrible

half of it is mindless waste of time action sequences of pickle rick killing dozens of rats and armed men with no humour or suspense or consequences or anything that would have made it interesting. don;'t forget about the intolerably self-aware babbling dialogue that boils down to the writers thinking they're way too smart to be doing an inane b-movie murderfest but doing that exact thing anyway. the other half is the stupid fucking family drama that they put in every single episode now where the family go to a therapist who hears them bitch at each other for 20 seconds then immediately launches into a lengthy overblown monologue about the family's problems that we already new from the first episode. oh guys rick is a aloof and distant supergenius who doesnt have time for his family... such great and amazing revelations were getting that was not at all completely redundant! love it!!!! the mom is UPSET that her DAD ISNT THERE MORE? what a fascinating turn of events that will go great in your show that was originally a fun cartoon about a guy and his grandson exploring alien worlds where stuff actually happens
then rick shows up at the end of the episode and him and beth agree to go get drinks, but not before more fucking monologues that are way, way too long that just labouriously go over why the characters are bad people that we already knew about and add nothing to the episode. my favourite part of the ending is how the characters are exactly where they were when they started, and absolutely nothing changed meaning this whole therapy subplot was for nothing. cant wait for episode four!!!! I'M PICKLE RICK!!!!

The fact that the show appeals to reddit fags and panders to the internet is the main criticism for it though. The whole love isn't real and school is for losers shit. It's aimed at the underachieving virgin male internetter. Which some people don't really find funny

Maybe we just don't enjoy it, maybe the humour pretends to be smarter than it is so we laugh at the faggots who enjoy it.

1 that is not my argument. I was saying that the characters are not philosophers. They have not read being and nothingness. They haven't had time to sit through a Russian door stopper. Still they are in the middle of circumstances that beg the questions that are the foundations of existentialism. Questions that are perhaps being asked more today than ever. Call it a cheap appeal to sympathy or whatever but it is up to the stories of an era to reflect its culture.

2 these people were not nihilists. I'm only addressing this at all because the quality of the shows philosophy was brought into question. That still is one of the only points someone has tried to make.

3 "it's just not a good show" "there's a lot of stuff that is really bad". The fact is you can't make a single specific argument about the shows quality.

4 maybe in a season or two it will be bad your right. Maybe in a season or two it will bring about a golden era for mankind. Probably not though right?

4.5 herd mentality is actually in favor of the show being a unique and enjoyable experience. Nice try.

5 I am a dropout. I have all of the time in the world to read books and wonder whether a cartoon is fulfilling the dreams of the collective unconscious or if scribble pupils is an okay artistic choice.

Because it's the one of the dullest franchises in the history of cartoon franchises. Each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books were good though
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

It wasn't mindless he was a fucking pickle killing things by using a dead rats nervous system. The whole joke is that he is so vulnerable yet somehow he can contend with real dangers. Not inherently funny no, but paired with part of the idea of the episode it is more meaningful. Rick is so powerful that mundane things to him are relatively pointless. Also he uses his intelligence as a way to strengthen his ego when he know he is messing up. The murder is supposed to be chaotic and excessive because that's what he does instead of deal with his actual issues.

>rick is aloof and doesn't have time for his family
If you paid attention you would know that that isn't the problem at all. Rick has All the time in INFINITE universes for his family but he can't deal with commitments. Which admittedly sounds lame in such short wording but there you have it.

They are actually upset because the mom doesn't want to admit that rick missed the meeting intentionally. The talks explore Beth or whatever's character and explains why she is puts so much value in independence. See how these motifs keep reappearing in such a short time?

Somehow you don't consider breaking out of the strongest prison in the universe and saving the planet stuff happening. I'll let you sort that out. And finally the fact that nothing changes by the end is important to the meaning of the episode. Beth and rick are the ones who get to decide how to continue and they choose not to deal with their problems against the children's wishes. Like father like daughter. For nothing ignores 23 minutes of content.

The love isn't real thing is coming from a flawed character. It is not a point the show is trying to teach. It's like notes from the underground in a lot of ways. The main character is a hyper intellectual who uses his intelligence to absolve his moral inadequacies. The point of the book isn't to tell you that you should be the underground man. It's that you shouldn't

Is it really about what the show is trying to teach? The point is that the 'flaws' Rick shows are flaws that are intended to be funny, yet in the eyes of those that call the show 'reddit' don't find funny at all. The shtick simply is not for them, regardless wether the show is trying to make you see this as good or bad or as a trait of a character or a message.
>>
>>86234385
I'm just trying to make it known that the show is not pushing some reductio-nihilistic ideology on its audience. If anything it's closer to the opposite. People who feel they are being patronized or that the show is preaching to an edgy atheist choir are simply mistaken.

Some of the scenes try to be funny in an edgy way. The "join the club" scene I thought was worth a smirk. If that's not your cup of tea then that's that. However if you are trying to say they go about it in a mediocre way then you need to put forth an example that you think is the right way and explain why it is better. Otherwise you are saying nothing but "I lack a sense of humor when it comes to that".
>>
>>86235154
But don't you get it? The main character is right about important plot things. That means he's meant to be right about everything!!

If he wasn't some nihilistic mouthpiece preaching The Way Things Objectively Are, what would people have to meme about?
