I never put much thought into it until now, but actually the lonely, and alienated from society explanation actually does make sense when viewed in context.

You have to consider the time period the movie is set in. Yes we in the modern day take it for granted that there were such things as porno theaters but it wasn't always that way. The seventies were a wacky era when the boundary between movie and porn movie were fairly blurry. Just a few years prior the MPAA for the first time, gave their approval to a movie with nudity in it (the Holocaust film "the Pawnbroker"), and no one was entirely sure where the line was. "Adult movie" theaters became a thing out in the open for the first time. The 1972 pornographic film "Deep Throat" was mentioned om the Johnny Carson Show, advertised in the New York Times, and reviewed by Roger Ebert.

Now let's consider Mr. Bickle for a moment. He's out of touch, spends much of time in Times Square, the only interaction with popular culture he has is the television. As far as he knows these new pornographic movies are just the new Hollywood normal. Considering he already sees the world as a diseased degenerate place in need of a real rain, it's perfectly understandable that he would assume pornographic movies are just part of that trend in popular culture, and then when trying to hook up with a normal girl he proceeds to ape this distorted view of what normal popular culture is, in order to fit in and get the girl.
