Just because GoT got publicity for being able to kill out main characters like Ned early on doesn't mean you have to kill someone every now and then as if to appease some kind of blood god.
He was in a battle, there's no should either way in that battle.

Last couple of seasons it feels to me that they're just killing off characters to please the blood god and so they don't have to write for that character and don't have to pay that actor. Then introduce new characters just so they can sacrifice those as a reminder that they still mean business.
