One of the characters even said that the point of Jigsaw's traps was to survive them. He wasn't murdering them for the fun of it, there was a method to his madness.

The first movie was actually pretty good. I saw it in the cinema, before it became a yearly franchise, and came out thinking it was a decent, but slightly inferior Seven, i.e. Jigsaw punishing his victims for what he perceives as their 'sins'. His punishment set-ups were pretty inventive and no way as OTT and ridiculous as in the many sequels. The finale where the dead guy in the bathroom turned out to be Jigsaw himself was a great twist that few would have foreseen.

I wish they'd have just left it at that and not ruined it with every subsequent shitty sequel.
