Those mechs were mainly there for heavy lifting jobs and perimeter control and in an environment such as Pandora it comes in handy being able to cut vines that may block your path. And since security is part of their responsibility they need a way to effectively kill attacking alien creatures without potentially shooting at miners that are around or other personell in the surrounding area.

this sound cool and believable, we've already seen that Eywa can transfer peoples minds between bodies so a potential other divine force residing on the moon might have similar abilities.
You can even make it less of a one-dimensional saturday morning cartoon villian by making the anti-Eywa have a complete opposite agenda, for example
wanting to create a technologically advanced society.
The na'vi could be split between these two forces with some following Eywa and wanting to live like the na'vi in the movie and some following anti-Eywa and are willing to follow its creed
