Female heroin addicts very commonly trade sex for drugs, usually with a partner who has drugs or can afford them. That hedonistic and selfish lifestyle leads to cheating in return for other drugs and any interpersonal bonds are purely pragmatic and exploitative - never turn your back on a junkie. So eventually they need to go into prostitution for drugs. So her story was actually really realistic.

Getting an infected arm is hardly rare, nor is ignoring it - i did a rotation in a substance abuse clinic and we had plenty coming in with arms that looked like they were from a body horror film. I never heard of any amputations but im sure they happen.

Prison is self-explanatory enough and the mum's story is so tragic that it can't be called overrated and pretentious.
