The thing is, its perfectly fine if they wanted to go the whole "lets explore Rick's relationship with his family" route, but if they did it in a creative way through character actions and plot... like when Rick gave himself up after realizing how miserable he was making his family on tiny planet. But to try and do some sort of pseudo-intellectual character exploration by just having a therapist character go off on some ridiculously long, vague monologue is just so fucking uncreative.

That would work if the character was generally liked by most people.
What worked before:

Making characters less flawed is not a good idea since the plot dynamics will suffer.

no it didn't. The scifi scenarios in rick and morty episodes are A LOT more clever and interesting than futurama , where the writers constantly had to ground things back in the present day. Futurama really used the scifi opportunities available to a very limited and not that interesting degree.

-what if you created a miniature universe in a box with increased time and told the inhabitants to produce power so you could power your car, but that miniature universe itself produced a miniature universe to produce its power
-what if you left your grand daughter in a scifi car and told the advanced AI to protect the daughter and the advanced AI used less and less violent but increasingly resourcefu ways to keep your daughter safe from ncreasing threats from law enforcement
-what if a married couple's therapy practice created life forms based on the couples mental images of the other person


you'd probably need to scour through 5 seasons of futurama to find scifi scenarios that are as interesting and well pulled-off as rick and morty's

I guess it's official: Rick is now a Mary Sue.

In the past, Rick's only strength was his ability to put logic over feelings. It made him capable of killing when it needed to be done. Rick was never really an intelligent character. He didn't even invent his portal gun, another one of himselves did it. He wasn't intelligent to get with Unity, just a charismatic guy. As a matter of fact, most of his "power" so to speak, came from his relations with other people, not from his own intelligence.

This episode turned him into some sort of intelligent super being, but failed to explain how. It was Rick accomplishing feat after feat. Setting up amazing traps and turning AA batteries into deadly laser guns and rigging rooms with explosives-- all off camera, of course, because explaining HOW he did it would actually require some skilled writing.

So Rick is now a Mary Sue. He's just a perfectly intelligent being who can do everything at once and is now smarter than everyone ever. He's not just some personified Id with a portal gun. Way to completely misunderstand and ruin a character. Oh and on a completely unrelated note this episode was written by a woman.

I feel like seasons 2 & 3 of Rick and Morty were trying to do what Venture Brothers did, but fell flat on its face.
VB, especially in seasons 2&3, did an excellent job blending golden age comic and sci fi hijinks with meaningful characterization. The characterization was in the background, and you could treat it as a straight [adult swim] show and have a good time.
Look at "Tiny Rick" or "Auto Erotic Asphyxiation" to see how heavy handed the season 2 onward dramatic moments are, compared to "The Doctor is Sin", or any of the finales.
