why did so many people respond to this movie so negatively?
Some people I know have vitriolic hatred for it. Their comments seem pretty petty and semantic, like "why is the white guy playing jazz?" and "why does he need to play 'pure' jazz?"
I thought it had a good center, but the edges were rough

It's 2017, no one wants to see wh*te men as leads, it's time to end racism and let minorities take a more prominent spot in our films. Why couldn't Emma Stone be in a relationship with an actual black jazzman? Wh*te devils stole the music from the black man, it's not fair.

Because they didn't commit to being a straight movie or a musical.
Went far, far too long between musical numbers, and yet, whenever a musical number would come on, it just felt like an interruption to the movie I was watching.
And personally, I prefer songs that focus on the music rather than the dancing, but I know some musicals are about the choreography more than putting out bangers. Trouble is, when you do that, you have to make sure your dancers can actually, yeah know, dance.
