Standup comedy is a dead artform. Standup comedians follow a formula which leads to hack shit. If you want to laugh, watch funny people riffing with each other rather than going through the motions with an audience. Golden age Opie and Anthony had an assortment of funny commedians coming in like Bill Burr, Louie C.k. and Patrice O'neal and they would riff with the best of them. Tough Crowd was a funny show because comedians would pretty much just hang out and address each other rather than the audience. Cum Town is a podcast starring failed comedians who make me laugh the hardest I have in years because Nick Mullen riffing with his friends is a thousand times funnier than his stand up.

Writing comedy is different than doing stand up. With a scripted show like snl you got a team of people, you make up a scenario and someone says "wouldn't it be funny" or "you remember that guy". Stand up is literally the art of story telling. You recount an experience or thought you had but you have to spice it up so people respond to it. If your giving off the wrong energy people can feel and respond negatively.

It always seemed like most of the competent female humorists don't do standup, they do scripts and books and such. Plus most women have awful senses of humour. I know this because I have to deal with lots of them on a normal basis due to my writing and they take even the mildest ribbing (whether it's between characters in story or in my response to their comments) like a cumshot to the eye.
