After watching Covenant, I became convinced that the only good Alien was the original, and that the original was only good because of a chance confluence of factors that willliterallynever occur again. Agree/disagree? Also, general thoughts on Covenant?

Agree. Covenant, like Prometheus, is a good movie just not a good Alien(s) movie.

Neither Prometheus or Covenant are good movies.
>>85883850
I submit that Prometheus is good.

Aliens was better

Newness which induces surprise in the viewer. When you watch an Alien film today, you know what the eggs and face hugger do. You're not surprised or shocked by a monster bursting out of a person's chest.
The original Alien introduced all of that using a script where the characters, who were regular mining support staff, were also unknowing of the characteristic of the alien and thus ill equipped to fight a creature with acid for blood.
Any Alien sequel has to have a very, very good script to not be derivative of Alien (horror) or Aliens (an outstanding action movie that gave viewers a first glimpse at how a small military deployment would fare against a bunch of aliens).
Being that the aliens are essentially somewhat mindless bugs, they cannot engage in conversations with the humans to drive the plot. I think part of the disappointment with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant is that people want to see something new and surprising but what they got was what they had already seen in the first two films.
