>After several months of flops like Warner Bros.’ “King Arthur” and EuropaCorp’s “Valerian,” movie studios and theaters are beginning to acknowledge that their streak of record-setting ticket sales may be coming to an end. AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., the world’s biggest cinema chain, laid out a worse-than-projected outlook for the North American box office this week.

>That announcement dragged down shares of theater stocks, wiping out $1.3 billion from the value of the top four cinema operators in North America since Aug. 1. Even with a new “Star Wars,” a Marvel superhero movie and the sequel to “Blade Runner” on the docket for the holiday season, the box office is unlikely to make up for a “severe hit” in the third quarter, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. To date, receipts are down 2 percent in 2017, and AMC is projecting a 1.5 percent decline for the full year.

>The concern is that the slump isn’t just a run of bad luck. Cinema operators have managed for years to keep increasing sales by raising ticket prices amid stagnant attendance, but a sharp drop in filmgoing would make that harder to sustain. And the tried-and-true formula of churning out big-budget sequels and cinematic universes populated with superbeings seems to be wearing on filmgoers. Movies featuring once-reliable draws Jack Sparrow, the Transformers and the Mummy did poorly in the U.S.

Will starshit and Disney save Hollywood?

Maybe this will put an end to the endless cycle of sequels, remakes & capeshit

The only thing that would change that is the tastes of consumers. Capitalism itself might as well be creating movies. If one establishment crashed, it would only be replaced with another that did the same things.
>>
>>85858430
Back in 2013 I predicted on the basis of announced Disney, Marvel, WB, DC, Sony, etc films that the industry crash would begin in 2016 or 2017. Looks like I was on the money.

These people never learn. Look up the disaster movie bubble to see what happened the last time. Fortunately that collapse gave us a more creative environment of filmmakers working on lower budgets with less producer interference, so kino might finally be back on the menu in the 2020's.

Hollywood is going to keep making them, and making them worse, and making them so that Chinese people will go buy tickets.

Americans are losing interest in the theater - we're going to keep moving to home streaming and Mr. Wu will gladly pay to see a bunch of white actors blow things up like "Amelicans" do

Consumer products will all move in this trend.

In which case they're fucked. The Chinese government just hoisted up the drawbridge on Western blockbuster releases, claiming (correctly, in my opinion) that these films are having a deleterious effect on Chinese popular culture and are little more than American social propaganda. It's going to be very difficult for any Hollywood studio to release blockbusters in mainland China from this year onwards.

the films have become too overtly political in a last ditch effort to secure the type of viewer who will watch anything simply because it aligns with their ideals, unfortunately for hollywood these people are in actuality far and few inbetween and more inclined to watch media on the internet

virtue signaling and race-bending/mixing isn't a formula for artistic or financial success, who knew.

Cameron will drive the last nail into its coffin.

Avatar, for all its faults, showed the world the tremendous potential of next-generation 3D filmmaking, which Hollywood promptly squandered by cheating out on post-conversions and low-budget gimmick films rather than meticulously crafting 3D experiences - now audiences hate 3D and will usually opt for 2D instead. By going for the short-term cash-grab instead of a long-term investment in quality they killed a chance to reap more revenue from higher 3D ticket prices.

Now watch them do the same thing again when Cameron pioneers glassesless 3D with Avatar 2.

That's the only film set in stone for August in China that I'm aware of, and they announced its release something like two years ago. Spider-Man Homecoming and Valerian are both fighting for August spots due to being denied releases earlier in the summer. Valerian was not made in Hollywood and had a lot of Chinese investment so it's probably safe.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/china-delays-release-spider-man-homecoming-valerian-1020258

China have seriously fucked Hollywood with this. It's like the merchants were playing checkers while the silk traders were playing chess. They've made them almost totally reliant on box office revenue from China for the last seven years or more, and now they've pulled the plug. I could honestly believe this was planned, and that Chinese investors are ready and waiting to buy up Hollywood when the studios start collapsing.
>>

You're not allowed entry if you're by yourself. It wasn't always this way. They put it into place after the Aurora shooting a few years ago.
>>
>>85860363
They'll never do that. Terminator 2 3D is out for one day only in most countries. I suspect the reason is they don't want audiences to see how much better films were in terms of lighting, aesthetic appeal, screenwriting, acting, practical effects, etc decades in the past vs the video game cutscenes that pass for movies today.

>Lucas and Spielberg told USC students that they are learning about the industry at an extraordinary time of upheaval, where even proven talents find it difficult to get movies into theaters. Some ideas from young filmmakers "are too fringe-y for the movies," Spielberg said. "That's the big danger, and there's eventually going to be an implosion — or a big meltdown. There's going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen megabudget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that's going to change the paradigm."

>Lucas lamented the high cost of marketing movies and the urge to make them for the masses while ignoring niche audiences. He called cable television "much more adventurous" than film nowadays.
Then he backtracked a few years later and said it was taken out of context.

Y'know, maybe I'm no business major, but wasn't that just about the stupidest thing they could've done? I mean, generally when a product or service experiences less demand, you lower the price. By raising prices, the only movies worth $15-20 are "event movies" like capeshit, so the studios essentially have now staked their entire survival on cranking out expensive tentpole garbage, which has now reached the point of diminishing returns.
>>
>>85862121
>“To clarify, I didn’t ever predict the implosion of the film industry at all,” he said, in comments reported by USA Today. “I simply predicted that [with] a number of blockbusters in one summer – those big sort of tentpole superhero movies – there was going to come a time where two or three or four of them in a row didn’t work. That’s really all I said. I didn’t say the film industry was ever going to end because of them.

>“I also was simply saying that that particular [superhero] genre doesn’t have the legs or the longevity of the western, which was around since the beginning of film, and only started to wither and shrivel in the 60s. I was also trying to make a point that there was room for every kind of movie today, because there seems to be an audience for everything.

>“Even five years ago, there wasn’t an audience for everything. But now, these little movies are squeezing in and finding a berth next to these huge Queen Mary-type movies. And they’re able to find enough of an audience to encourage the distributor and the film companies to finance more of them. And these just aren’t films like Bridge of Spies, but it’s independent movies as well.”

Anyone else in their twenties and not able to get their friends to see movies? Nobody I know wants to even go see Dunkirk. It's not just seeing a movie, it's agreeing on what to see, coordinating a time, having to choose which seats to reserve and praying there are 3 or 4 together for us, having to smell artificial butter on weirdly phony popcorn, then sitting through 30 minutes (timed it when I saw Baby Driver) of ads before you finally see the movie you paid 10 dollars to see. With the number of Coke ads in and around the movie I'm being exposed to, I feel like they should be paying me.
A subscription model really would be nice, along with no reserved seating (only theater close by does this so I have no other choice). Preferably one where I never even had to speak to anyone, I just scan a card and go into whatever movie I want. I'd like to see more movies and wouldn't mind going alone if that were the set up, but I'd feel like such a loser going by myself with the current set up.

Goddamn I wish this was me. I wished when I was a kid I could have a younger brother. Didn't have an older brother and my older sister just stole stuff from me. My parents adopted a kid who I thought would be the brother I always wanted but he ended up being the worst thing to ever happen to my family. We all tried so hard, even my older sister, but he just ended up a horrible person. He's in prison for raping two girls, theft, and selling heroin. All of that before he was 18. Fuck me for ever wanting a brother, I wish my parents never listened.

Investment banker here

There are various financial derivative products that profit from movie performance, movies are bundled into "kinobonds" with ratings similar to other bonds. AAA kinobonds are the big blockbuster superhero movies, a BB kinobond might be a movie like Dunkirk which is well regarded but there's no guarantee of massive profit. Junk kinobonds are the movies that go straight to DVD. The problem with kinobonds is that they're leveraged 30x-50x so lets say if a superhero movie loses $100 million, it could potentially translate into losses of $5 billion for investors. Kinobonds are being sold for future movies too, some of these movies aren't even coming out until 2020 and people are already expecting upwards of $1 billion dollars earnings for a single movie, they think China is going to save everything. Movie studios raise capital for making films by issuing kinobonds, and now even AAA kinobonds are beginning to fail. Basically it's like a repeat of the 2007 housing market crash but his time hollywood is fucked. I expect some major studios to go default in 2018, cancelling potentially $10 billion of locked in kinobonds leading to a loss of $500 billion for investors.

I stopped going to the theater purely because of price. Used to live in a town with an independently owned theater and matinee tickets for 2D showings were $6. I moved and now Regal is the only option for about 30 miles, and every time I go there the price goes up 25 cents. Last matinee 2d show I went to $9.30. If you go to a movie after 5:00 or get stuck seeing something in 3d, it's easily between $13-16.

No. That's exactly what needs to happen. They need to make better movies in order to see better profits. It is literally and unironically that simple. Obviously this wouldn't help how shitty and archaic movie theatres are but the studios themselves will see better profits if only from DVD and online sales if they would just make better movies.
Theatres will eventually be phased out. As they should be.

>You're not allowed entry if you're by yourself. It wasn't always this way

technically there has been a no singles policy at every theater for at least the last 10+ years. It's some BS studio based rule Hollywood felt would drive more ticket sales.

but being movie theaters are located all over the place and not just Hollywood most don't enforce it. Yet anyone who has seen a film at a theater in the last few years did so at a place that signed some sort of no singles policy rule with top distributors, they just don't enforce it.

that could of course change at any time but I doubt it will. Plus all one has to do is bring along a spare sweat shirt or jacket and say you had to go out the car and get it. You're "other" is already inside. No big deal.
>>
>>85866157

The main reason is that people will be willing to buy high priced tickets for franchise movies because they want to go see it, either because they know they'll like it or just to see it because they feel they have some sort of obligation

The real thing high ticket prices hurt is smaller, independent movies like The Lost City of Z or It Comes At Night. People are less willing to take a chance on those so they won't pay high ticket prices to go see them, but if theaters changed ticket prices to encourage going and seeing something out of your comfort zone, they lose out on the extra money from the franchise movies they would have gotten.

A solution could be having different movies be differently priced, but then the people seeing Transformers in 3D IMAX for $15 would feel like it's a ripoff when Lost City of Z is showing for $5.
>>
>>85865841
I genuinely enjoy the experience of driving to a theater, going through the lobby and finding my theater and seat. The problem is that there are fewer and fewer movies that I actually want to see

I know streaming is a more convenient option but to me it's nowhere near the same thing as going to the theater and seeing it there on a bigger screen. Seeing Interstellar in IMAX is far far different from seeing it on a 15" laptop screen. On top of all the stuff you mentioned, of course.

>>
>>85866344
Pretty much, the main thing it that I just find it much harder to engage with a movie I'm watching on a laptop unless it's very good or I specifically focus. In the theater you get the darkened room with the big picture, and hopefully with a good, loud sound system, and it just grabs your attention more, whereas on a laptop the temptation to just look away from the screen or do something else is much stronger. In my opinion streaming is useful for it's convenience, not because it's the best possible way to watch movies, and I only really use it as a result of not having anything worth going to the theater for

There have been sequels and remakes done for decades.

Key problem I think is this desire by studios to try and make every movie the next big thing that's supposed to appeal to as many demographics as possible.

Like the Ghostbusters movie was developed based on the idea that it hit a variety of demographic checkboxes.

It was based on a popular property.

It was all female to appeal to women.

It was silly with goofy ghosts so as to appeal to kids.

Yet it was a shit movie due to most of the movie being based on appealing to different demographics rather than trying to just make something entertaining.

Contrast that with Deadpool. A movie Ryan Reynolds tried for years to get made because he loves the character. A movie that ended up with him taking less money just to make sure it got made. A movie which tried its hardest to stay true to the source material.

It did fantastically well. Because rather than having some studio head that was purely trying to make a franchise, it had the backing of a guy that was just devoted to the source material and having fun with it.

Sony's leaked powerpoint slides just seems so fucking pathetic with how these movies get produced. It's almost all just about hitting as many checkboxes as possible.

Now they're doing the checkbox bullshit with Star Wars and people aren't caring, because more effort is being put into making a rainbow coalition out of the cast rather than make a compelling story.

Films aren't altering any chinks perception of the west because the chinese government goes out of their way to show them and convince them that the west is shit. The superhero films are dying a slow death.

Spider-Man Homecoming is on track to take less than Amazing Spider-Man 2 once the dust has settled. You may remember from the Sony email leaks that ASM2 "only" making about $700 million worldwide was enough to send them into a flat panic to reboot the franchise and go begging Disney/Marvel for help. Now just a few short years later BAKA with its smaller take is being hailed as "highly successful". Doesn't take a genius nor an accountant to work out actually, no, it's underperformed and they're probably deeply concerned behind closed doors but have to plaster on a smile and pretend everything's alright so the shareholders don't panic. Adding to their woes, its release in China is being delayed indefinitely by the government due to them reinstating the Hollywood blackout.

Observant people will have noticed this same trend with Marvel movies too. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 made less than GOTG1. Dr Strange underperformed (was expected to break $1b). Rogue One, a goddamn STAR WARS movie didn't make as much as Captain America: Civil War.

Expect the real panic to set in when The Last Jedi makes less than $1.5b vs TFA's $2.2b haul.

Why did they expect Dr. Strange to make $1b? Not many people other than comic fans know who Dr. Strange is

because normalfags created a notion - if its marvel its good and has to make 1-2 billion dollars.

My only questions are, how fast will they blame the average Joe cinemagoer? Will they blame my mate Joe here for bigotry? How much of taxpayers money will be used to save Hollywood?

>how fast will they blame the average Joe cinemagoer

They have been doing that since they started converting IPs into purely propaganda devices.

Jews will never ever take responsibility for their own actions, the Hollywood studios will blame everyone but themselves, when it was they who tried to create a universal successful film formula and use that as a vehicle for globalist propaganda, and failed at both.

I've probably missed that. From what i've recently read, i'd expect Boyega to say that, lol
>>
>>85869584
It's basically a matter of record if you look up interviews with Feige and details from behind the scenes of the production. It was meant to set up the dominos for the next "phase" of their cinematic universe like the existence of magic, the existence of a multiverse (can't afford RDJ any more? Just kill him off and bring in Iron Man from dimension 718 who's identical in every way but played by a less expensive actor!), etc. They spent a ton of money punching up the script, reshooting and reshooting again until they believed they had a monster hit on their hands, and then spent an absolute goddamn fortune aggressively marketing it.

Instead of doing Iron Man 3 money it just about limped its way past $600 million.

Why can't they just spend less money on smaller, cheaper, riskier movies that aren't franchise-based? Just look at the profit margins on Get Out, Split, or if you want to try seeing different without dropping the branding, Logan. I'm not saying I like these films or that they're genuinely experimental or risky. Just saying they made huge returns despite not being the kind of PG-13 wide-appeal merchandise commercials that all studios want to make nowadays to be just like Disney. Why the fuck does every film they put out have to be a $250 million money laundering scheme the size of a small economy? Fucking hell, these studios are going to bankrupt themselves in an attempt to become Disney. Make movies assholes, you'll never move merchandise like the mouse.

Don't worry bro the Chinese really do things like that. It only sounds tinfoil for all the idiots who have literally no idea about international relations and modern-day economic war ie. most of /tv/ users, half of which will call you /pol/ for it because they'd rather annoy people than reading a (non-comic) book for a change
>>
>>85861352
but rebirth can only happen after death
when all the big-budget releases become all massive flops and big studios go bust, only small budget stuff will be able to be made
that's when you can expect good quality from Hollywood again

You ;answered your own question. Jews like industries in which they cannot easily or realistically be held liable for their accounting.

Cinema will only improve when the Jewish stranglehold has been broken.
>>
there will be a rise in small theaters (alamo / star) that cater to adults and actual movie experience (food, superior seats, and of course indie type beers on tap)
the prices will keep the kids/teens away

>Shitting out something with mass appeal that takes no risks is always going to make more money
yeah, until they don't which is exactly what's starting to slowly happen
this Hollywood big-budget release strategy is unsustainable. They grew precisely because GOOD movies with LOW budgets were a massive hit. Now they're paying tens of millions just for a single actor, and they're fucked for it.
The only way to correct the strategy is to let it burn first

imagine you own a restaurant
>you pride yourself on serving a variety or dishes, from cheap to gourmet, and try to ensure that all meals are the best they could be
>all of a sudden, kale has become the latest craze
>you put a kale dish on the menu and it sells better than expected
>"wow look at these profits, i'll take a few items that don't sell well off the menu and replace them with kale dishes as well"
>business is booming
>since the majority of your sales are now kale dishes, you sack the qualified chefs in the kitchen and replace them with trained monkeys that can replicate the kale dishes
>quality of other dishes deteriorates as a result
>your entire business is now dependent on kale
>all of a sudden, everybody is getting sick of the constant stream of kale
>the tables start getting empty but you can't cook anything else of quality anymore

Because the lowest common denominator audience described is not everyone. They churn out this shit for the biggest possible audience, but here's the twist: there's still a fucking huge amount of people outside that audience, and they're being ignored in favour of the audience of retards who would watch literally anything if it had enough Fagbook likes.
