The U.S. auto industry lost a lot of jobs for the following reasons:

1. The union workers knowingly and intentionally cranked out shitty cars that could not compete with highly reliable foreign cars. This was during the mid-to-late 1970s into the 1980s or 1990s. U.S. made cars are pretty decent nowadays.

2. The management of the Big Three didn't have the balls to crack down on the entitled culture of the unions and management itself. Its goal was to keep churning out shit and play financial games (GMAC, anyone) until the executives could walk away with massive bonuses and massive retirement packages.

3. The shareholders (Wall Street in general) always whine for more profits and, not knowing a God damned thing about running a company properly, enabled and forced the automakers to slash R&D, ignore serious reform of labor and management, and play financial games.

4. The U.S. government, influenced by money from PACs and other financial interests, failed to create a business environment that was fair for American businesses against foreign businesses with weaker labor, environmental, and social protections. In the case of the U.S. automakers, this made their cost structures uncompetitive even while they were busy churning out shit.

Regarding financial games, perhaps you've heard the joke back in the day that GM was a giant bank that manufactured cars as a side business.

A lot of people are to blame for the mess that is the U.S. automakers. But I'm no Commie to blame only management or capitalism while labor totally blameless.

I'm from Detroit and have family who were in Detroit Public schools for years as students and as teachers (still really liberal, but it's not the kids they just need more funding :,[) Detroit Schools will buy millions worth of books and supplies and dump them to take pennies off of every purchase so they can get maybe $20,000 to keep while getting paid $50,000 for doing nothing most of the time. Then they lower standards because it's racist or they'll lower exams for teachers so you get teachers who can't speak English or are basically just someones niece who could do basic math and got a degree from a community college. The lower standards is why people take the SAT and ACT at down in Detroit if they can because your score gets boosted because anti-discriminitory laws and regulations. Asians and Indians will show up in packs to make sure they don't get fucked with and can openly cheat a lot of the time because examiners don't give a shit. Then their score increases because the gov't will gibs a better score to make sure that Tyrone will get into U of M so he can get a degree in General Studies (real fucking degree U of M made it for the athletes who can't read or just party and play).
