It gets better almost right away in The Drawing of the Three. I'd advise you to read upto and including Wizard and Glass and then stop. King writes well enough. Always engaging and a page turner. His biggest flaws are bad endings and a tendency to be unclear about what a "cool" person is. I detect too much of his own personality in main characters too often.

If you can take King's flaws, then the Dark Tower books are worth reading up till book 6.

The Gunslinger repeatedly calls attention to a highly practiced reloading trick that Roland does while putting a town of people to death, nevermind that a gunslinger in the dark tower series is a better shot than any person who has ever been in a western ever, and Roland is by and far the best of them.

Legit complaint. A major character hates him for his white skin, repeated reference to his "bombadier" blue eyes, but I'd say it's a bigger deal that Elba isn't fucking ancient old like Roland is supposed to be.

I want you to imagine a world that would be able to actually sit through a totally faithful rendition of The Gunslinger and maybe The Drawing of the Three and not get too bored to continue. By the time you'd get to Drawing where it starts being really interesting (or arguably the tarot scene at the end of Gunslinger) there's been so many slow paced tracking shots more in line with classic westerns and like two or three action scenes in the entire film, one of which actually being fun to watch, cuz the other two would be the slow mutants and the drop.

However, this is probably gonna be shit. I really love the Dark Tower series, I think it has many redeeming qualities, such as being this genre bending soup of concepts and settings and references and such that somehow sticks together rather than falling apart, but so many incredibly stupid things happen that are integral to the plot that, well I don't even know why I finished it, much less why anyone else did.

McConaughey will make a very good Flagg.
Elba will make at least an okay Roland, though he's a fantastic actor.
That kid playing Jake looks on point as fuck but all child actors suck, I guess we'll see.

Hell, looking it up, Susan is for sure cast in it, hopefully in a 2-second flashback scene.

Shit, even hoping this is a decent adaptation of the books might not be enough for the series to actually work.
