It would of been remade regardless whether he was involved or not so I think it's actually a cool idea that he's doing it and not some nobody newcomer who would of easily fuck it up.

John Landis himself said it was a good idea that he sold the rights for the film. I don't remember the exact quote but it was something like..

He goes on to say
"If the movie is bad, it will be forgotten and the original film is looked at as even more of a work of art and he himself would look like a genius".

With that being said I think remaking it is stupid and his son is a obnoxious faggot with a shitty voice. I also agree by saying An American Werewolf is his best film.
