This was being written in since nearly the beginning but Jerry's been nothing but a nice dude and gets fucked over by his cunty, contemplates cheating on him to his face wife. Like jesus he's a nice dude who's a scaredy cat, and somehow as the viewer I'm supposed to swallow him getting fucked at every turn and laugh at it? This episode made me super pissed at the whole family. Beth was a cunt like usual, but even Morty and Summer were being shitty. And of coouuuuurse Jerry gets kicked out of his own fucking house to live in a shithole building with hookers outside. If the season is anything like this episode then the series is gonna fucking tank.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

I'mma add on to that the "I fucking love Post-Apocalyptic versions of us" line. In fact it's that line in particular that lets me totally believe the whole "written by a woman" gripe you're on about. It feels off.

While the general tone is still in place (I dug anything with Morty's arm) I felt like despite how fucked up it was it never felt...fucked up enough. Like, you have Summer and Morty killing scores of people but it has no stakes for them. It's a fucking vacation, murder in a separate universe is fun but compared to something like, say, the escape from that Gear planet in the episode with the Fart it's kinda dull. The setting doesn't help, you absolutely expect gratuitous murder in Mad Max-land. I get that it's supposed to be a therapeutic thing and some character time for Morty and Summer but since I never gave a shit about Summer beforehand nothing here changed my mind.

Despite how much of a meme it is I'm looking forward to the Pickle Rick ep. They have some opportunities there imo.

They're trying to cram more character arc stuff into each episode. While that's respectable, the scripts have gone to shit. I could easily feel which jokes (basically, most of them) got quickly inserted long after the actual story was finished. The show has been a bit neater than this before. I kind of think that this episode was supposed to be off-kilter in tone because the characters are all dealing with something they haven't before and that's what was alluded to in the first episode of the season, although the delivery of the darkest years of our adventures implied something very different to what we've seen so far.

This season will either crash and burn or it'll actually turn into something decent in the long run. Consider how slow Bojack's first season was to start, and that was starting a more emotional focus.

I think the episode was solid enough, but because of the 4 month gap between the Rickshank Redemption and this, then people were either expecting too much or weren't invested enough to give a slower episode a pass. If this aired the week after that with the promise of another one next week, I feel it wouldn't be catching nearly as much flack.

The episode wasn't really Summer focused, just not Rick focused. I feel like this was intentional because it's been at least shown in the past that Rick runs from his problems or is so flippant about a single dimension's problems he'll fuck off elsewhere when it gets too heavy. One thing that I did like was that he at least acknowledged he wasn't dealing with Beth's divorce well either, which is a very different character to the man 2 seasons ago.

This was a good foundation for more character-focused episodes and a good way to work on baggage rather than drawing it out all season.

Yeah it had a lot of funny moments. The Dan "character" growth stuff was a lot less fun the other main characters stuff. Some of the guest stars we're good. I liked the whole racist guild plot.

I like that we seem to be dipping into themes of how to do nihilism correctly and in a, quote mode, "healthy way." end quote mode.
Previous episodes generally only explored it so far as Rick putting forth a persona of being made of stone and nothing mattering but secretly harbouring contradictory opinions by fairly often deciding that some things do matter. Which was fun, but didn't explore the themes much deeper than that. It was less about nihilism as a whole and more about Rick's personal experience with it.
Here, the ideals of the shallow shitty nihilism that Rick practices keep getting explicitly referred to in the context of being shallow and shitty. Hemorrhage briefly suffering a personality crisis when he realises that he's just being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian was pretty great. All the little pepperings of nihilist themes that can't be looked too deeply into on their own but establish those themes as being present in Summer's life right now were fantastic. The irony of a value signifying Jerry's familial relationship with Summer being placed on the words "everything's bullshit" when he's specifically referring to that nihilistic mindset is wonderful.
After this episode established Summer's own experience with nihilism and highlighted a few ways in which it differs from Rick's by holding it up to nihilism as a whole, I hope that we eventually get to see their experiences clash together at some point, and I wouldn't be disappointed if season 3 continued getting deeper into these themes.

Why did Rick stop burping and drooling in this episode. He only did it in one scene at the end.
Is this supposed to imply that this wasn't C-137 Rick? Or did was it an oversight, or did the creators just get tired of it?
If it was intentional, what's the take-away of this not being C-137?

All the characters talked to fast. I've never heard summer say that much, so maybe that's just how she talked.
But Rick's little speeches were almost impossible to understand. I listened to his bit about "random particles" right before Jerry arrives at the garage, at least 10 times, and I still can't hear everything.

I honestly hope this show devolves into complete shit so I can see the fans cry and REEEEEE and try to defend it.

This time it was just shitty writing, nothing else. Raising Gazorpazorp was one of their best episodes and it had feminist themes all over it. Summer was actually alright that ep. However, they really did rush her development. She was pretty much fucked up from all the weird shit happening throughout season 2 but now somehow she's as nihilistic and used to all of it as Rick is. Morty has been with Rick for a longer time and has experienced weirder shit and he's still always fucking up. It screamed the strong independent woman trope (which isn't inherently bad) but felt extremely forced and out of context. Also don't forget the bad dialogue and joke delivery, dull usage of a good setting, inconsistencies in how the characters acted (even those who'll just appear on this ep), etc. If they really go this route with having a badly developed Summer going with the adventures the show will just be flat out mediocre

Not really surprising the show is suffering.

The thing about R+M is that it works as an edgy alternative comedy, a sci-fi comedy between a crazy asshole who fucks up and a neurotic dunce who gets to shine now and again - once it becomes mainstream and the creators know it, it has to do alot more to remain either relevant, or at least buoyant enough to still be interesting.

The problem is it doesn't have enough of Roiland's madness, which specifically requires Rick and Morty fuck around for half an hour and no other established characters are getting in the way at the same time - they work as a nice contrasting sideplot, and that's it.

Roilands comedy is hit or miss but it's better to have some gems with duds than this "safe" route of trying to develop this sort of plot or cast of characters - meanwhile you're flanderising people's favourite characters because they're on-screen less and thus any time they're on screen you're forced to exaggerate them instead of giving them a bit of downtime to just be there.

All the while they're playing to the crowd with catchphrases - it seems it's always the unfunniest, lowest denominator memes that get this appreciation, which is not the reason the show is good. The danger is the creators had lighting in a bottle and didn't realise what made the show a hit, and pander to reddit instead of doing their own thing.

It doesn't really bode well, at least there's a season to prove me wrong. I'm just worried it's gonna be le feminist adventures of Summer and Jerry the Cuck and we get only two classic episodes that only have, you know, the characters the show is named after?
