Aragorn did not ever need anyone to vouch for him. Denethor's rejection of the line of Isildur was based on the Stewards spurning all claimants to Gondor's throne should they come outside the lost line of Anarion in ancient times, even though Isildur's line had the rightful claim after all Anarion's heirs fell. In Denethor, the culmination of pride and arrogance of the Stewards almost leads Gondor to ruin but his son Faramir accepts Aragorn's claim and sets things to right. Rejection of pride and power is a central theme here, in case anyone did not notice.
