Your interpretation. I see no reason why they couldn't pick up their lives as changed people. They were operating behind a layer of conventionality and ignorance that they were better off to have stripped away. Had that occurred a few years into their marriage there might have been a greater sense of violation, but they hadn't even consummated it.
