I liked it. The end felt a little rushed. ScarJo was a little too heavy for the role after her baby and it was distracting. I don't remember the original because it's been years since I saw it so I don't know how it compares.

Sorry tripsbro but I don't agree with you. Sure they took some visuals and copied them (intro, flooded fight scene, spider tank scene) but I still stand by what I've said.
>>

They copied entire film. Some parts - shot by shot.
Just dumbed down and simplified plot. Nothing else.

Btw, i still do not know what villain in movie tried to achieve.
>>
>>85608095
The 'villain' (assuming you mean Hideo) was trying to kill the people who made him what he was.

>>
>>85606993

>>
>>85606993
Most of the bad press was pushed by the lazy "white washing" virtue signaling. People who had no idea what the movie was about anyway. Scarlett Johansson looked like the character to me and the Japanese don't give two shits about american navel gazing issues. They "japanese wash" all the time when adapting Korean and American storylines as well as deliberately use white people in advertising because they stand out.
>>
lt was an almost a totally superficial adaptation of the franchise, but it was faithful and captured the visuals really well.
The plot is no deeper than a kiddie pool, and the 'twist' and 'romance' afterwards felt hamfisted as hell.
ScarJo's major is too emotionless, almost like she or the director based her performance solely on the English dub of the first movie.
Overall it was alright, not 'bad' but I'd rather watch S.A.C. again.
I'd love a sequel that focuses more on the universe and world rather than the major herself.

I know it proxies.
But why? Why humans, how it worked?
It is all so dumb.
Just for the visuals, no meaning at all.

Even scene with a garbage truck. In anime they follow man, who you think actual puppetmaster.
But in movie they trying to catch actual truck drivers. So dumb.
>>
>>85608352
That wasn't his sole purpose. He didn't even know his name or why he was seeing the glitches until the end of the film.

He originally set out to murder the scientists who made him. His priorities only changed when he discovered Major whisky she was in the Deep Dive.

I believe it is you who needs to rewatch the film.

I loved the movie for the same reasons I loved the 95 animated one:

Beautiful visuals, great setting, great atmosphere and the soundtrack (which I hope the 2017 version will finally get a release of).

I saw the trailer to this movie and heard people git upset its not a Japanese actress. I thought the complaint made sense. Then I watched the movie and realized the japanese girls' brain got hijacked by the entreprise and put into scarjo's robot body. How does it not make perfect sense for the story that she wouldnt have an asian appearance? The entreprise didnt care about preserving her memories, they obviosuly also dont care about preserving her appearance. It's actually better for the story that she's a different race now.

I can't imagine how anyone could like this unless you just enjoy being contrarian. I don't give one shit about the whitewashing or SJW stuff at all, that has nothing to do with how terrible this movie was.

The tone, the pacing, just everything was wrong compared to a real movie. The characters were lifeless and uninteresting, especially Scarlett who acted like she was still in Under the Skin. The villain was the most generic evil bad guy, jesus that was bad.

The CLIMAX of the movie is a Hobbit-CGI-tier boss battle with a spider tank (which is somehow shittier than just a normal tank- can't hit any of its shots and dies from a top panel being ripped off), and it just ends. Mr. 'I'm a bad ass' asian guy just executes the villain elsewhere with no effort.

Why can't these people find a competent writer to go with their expensive visuals

One of the most popular plastic surgeries there removes their epicanthic fold leading to a European eye shape. Personally I wouldn't want them all to do it because some Asians are qt but I like the increase in variety on principle.

It's torn between being faithful and doing it's own thing. When it's trying to be faithful it's simply inferior to the original and when it's doing it's own thing, it's never sufficiently explored because of all the time spent on being another movie. That said I wouldn't say it's bad, just mediocre and I know people who haven't seen the original who have said they liked it quite a bit.

Too many holograms, too many times Scar Jo felt forced or unconfident about the part, too many parts that felt flat along with the characters.

What was the movie trying to tell? You kinda get a glimpse but the it just gets confused.

Also, 90s future doesn't look full of fucking holograms everywhere.

It's like it tried to mimic the 95 movie and in doing so it forced a lot of things stylistically.

I loved the cars and some designs.

Visually, there was some really cool stuff. But the exterior shots were obviously fake, and the rainy, neon setting wasn't utilized to the fullest. I was NOT that comfy, compared to the anime or blade runner, for example. Also the writing and acting were very bleh.

>>
>>85619980
How in the fuck was she fat?
>>
>"I expected nothing, and was still disappointed."

This movie was shit for several reasons, none of which are ScarJo's lack of asian genes.

First because the casting and acting were terrible (Takeshi Kitano as Aramaki?). Secondly, because the world was so fucking bland and uninteresting (wow, fucking holograms. Never seen that before.). Thirdly, because it took all the "famous" scenes from the anime, threw them in with no consideration for how/why they actually worked in the previous adaptation, and thus made them all somehow worse and less interesting.

Lastly, the writing was atrocious and lacked any nuance or exploration of theme. Everyone involved in creating this script should be blacklisted from ever constructing a sentence again.

Not just bad writing, but the movie is just such really inconsistent visually.
And its really rare for something like blocking to stand out as bad but jesus every time a character moves, even if its just walking into frame it just feels off.

warch the original anime, and figure it out. oh actually you cant enjoy it now, the live action is so dumbed down they have to explain every single bit since it was made for morons.
>>
>>85606993
I couldn't even make it through the fucking opening.
>>
>>85607544
Except the movie was based solely on 1 anime movie.
>>
>>85606993
it wasn't fantastic but it wasn't as bad as the weebs are saying, it was decent.
>>
>>85607387
>everything in the movies is explained to you twice.

so just like the chinese cartoons then?
>>
>>85606993
>Remind me why this was panned again?
It's one of those anime properties that languished for 20 years in development hell and only went forward because some 45 year old jew who loved it when he was a young weeb pushed it.

Does she ever wear this outfit in the film?
>>
>>85625763
why would a robot/android need boobs
>>
>>85625883
In the case of someone like kasunagi, familiarity. It's why she uses a female shell when she can easily use a male one
>>
>>85625763
No, they don't show cleavage in Hollywood movies anymore.

Fucking kikes, I watched SAC for this shit.
>>
>>85625883
Cyborg, the bodies were basically equivalent to prosthetics. Indeed they even say as much in the source material. If you had to move your brain into a fabricated body, wouldn't you feel better/less alienated with a robo-dong?
>>
Who was the final boss in this movie?
>>
>>85626053
I kinda wish that was what the movie was leading up to. There are legitimately potentially interesting things the movie could have done. But they never bother to do anything with those things.

That's exactly how they explain it though.
It was a Japanese girl put in the shell that resembles a white western female.

But you're a virgin, OP.

-Batou's actor kept dropping his accent. He was a lot stiffer than his animu counterpart
-Scarjo's weird walk and trying to sound robotic.
-Insertion of the creator/creation relationship with the lady scientist felt hijacked from I, Robot. It didn't need to be there.
-Not enough time spent on the rest of the team. Togasu is pretty interesting. He's like the good cop/detective. Great work ethic and really dedicated to his job. He's non cybernetic so he acts as the relateable one of the group. It was good to see him break away from the team a little and do his thing in SAC.
-Aramaki was pretty badass in the movie but I feel like giving him a gun was the cheap way out. I liked him better as a string-puller in the animu. He was threatening at times because of his connections and strategic thinking. We never got a full sense of that in the movie. He also trusted Major and it seems like he didn't at first in the movie.
-Michael Pitt was a cheap choice for Kuze. He's such a typecast villain. I feel like the whole "they stole your life" thing was pretty typical hollywood too. No need for that kind of "twist" or mystery there. Major was a company girl and her following Section 9's orders was part of her character. It plays into the themes of how much self control she actually has. Plus she generally trusts her team and wouldn't abandon them like that.
-Motoko being an anti-tech journalist was dumb. I don't know if that ever came up in some other anime besides the 95 movie or SAC. But Major obviously embraces technology enough and enjoys being enhanced at times. Switching bodies and shit to her isn't jarring. Again, no need to do the side plot. We could have gotten some screen time for better characterization.

I hate the movie but I can't hate scarjo

I have problem with the city.
So, everything, the evil corp, the mother, the government, and the lawless zone are all in Hong Kong
>>

It's kind of implied to be Japan. But there's white and brown people everywhere, and most of them speak English for some reason.
>>
>>85627432
But I mean I wish that was where the movie ended. But it just goes on, and they act like they explored something deep when they didn't really.
>>
>>85628416
The only reason it was even there was so that spergs wouldn't flip the fuck out that Scar Jo is playing a character that was Japanese in other media.
>>
>>85627915
No I mean I thought it should involve more cities to be national

Now it feels like its Gotham city
>>
>>85606993
I thought it was fine.
Not amazing, but I would watch it again and enjoy it.

Probably the closest we'll get to a good live adaptation.
Up next is Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, Deathnote. Is anyone even interested in any of these?
