Homer's politics are partly a reflection of Matt Groening's and his own family's who have been anti republican his whole life.

See I actually watched the Simpsons/Futurama with episode commentary on and Matt is on there a lot and occasionally he talks about how much he hated growing up with Nixon as his president. In fact one of the reasons he brought Nixon back in Futurama was so he could make fun of him forever.

Homer supporting Trump is just another delusion from Trump supporters who still have not woken up yet. Attend another rally why don't you.

Lisa was always liberal, it was just they would interrupt her liberalism with a bit of light-hearted mockery.

For example, the episode where Homer coaches the football team and makes Bart be quarterback even though he hates is has Lisa announce she wants to sign up. Then Flanders (the original coach) tells here that's great, she'd be the 4th girl to join, and Lisa kind of mumbles how she only really wanted to join to raise a point, and then leaves. The show was probably a bit left of centre overall, but it was capable of making a joke about the left.

Speaking of character traits they don't have anymore, Smithers is now out of the closet gay and there's no homophobic jokes about him the way there was in virtual every episode where Smithers played a large role back in the 90s.
