I feel like Nolan's decision to never show the enemy was less of an artist choice and more of a "I don't want to deal with all the 21st century politically correct garbage of showing a nazi on screen" choice. Just like that video game that removed all the swastikas.

No, the absence of close ups of german soldiers is because the whole film is shown entirely from the perspective of the brits on that beach, they also didn't see a single german up close there, only Stukas/bombs/torpedoes. It's entirely an artistic choice, and a good one.
