Dunkirk is partially about driving people to their animalistic subconciousness.

All the different characters doesn't have huge arcs, but instead portray distinctive personas like bravery, fear, anger, sadness etc. The intention of this was to focus on how soldiers actually are on the battlefield, in front of making a select character be a glorified war hero.

This movie doesn't fetishise war, that's why you don't root for any of the characters.
