The sopranos is massively overrated and only gotthe hype because of all the crap shows that where being put out before it and it made tv a relevent media catalyst
hbo has even put out better shows like "true detective"

It's overrated but not massively overrated. My main problem with this show is their decision to dedicate so much time to annoying characters.

>>
>>85554661
if sopranos came out today it wouldn't stand out as much, certainly, but that's a meaningless hypothetical since the things it'd compete with today would be far less subtle or ambitious if sopranos hadn't come out already.

true detective is 8 episodes, sopranos is 86. i'd like to see true detective maintain its quality for 80 more episodes (most would say it's failed already but i do think season 2 is on par w/ sopranos, though the steep decline from season 1 doesn't bode well)

Although both GoT and Breaking Bad has artistic merit, great emotional and intense moments etc it still isn't anywhere near Sopranos.

Simply because it's still fairytales. Sopranos is real. It is as close to a look into an actual life that we will ever get. The emotions you are left with are genuine and grounded, they are not seasons of pushing forth certain characters and secrets that must surface in order for a crazy storyline to hit perfection and deliver the goods.

The goods are delivered every fucking second in Sopranos.

Also, it's unpredictable. Modern television shows love to throw in their hidden messages and symbolism that foreshadow future events in the show. Autistic reddit and /tv/ users notice these details and create theory posts for future episodes, completely ruining the surprise later.

Literally all of Game of Thrones Season 6/7, Westworld, etc could be easily predicted once the details were noticed.

Only thing I remember the Sopranos doing was the "cut to black" speech a couple episodes before the Sopranos ending.

I firmly believe that if you don't at the very least like and appreciate The Sopranos for being a complete artistic vision with well acted fully fleshed out characters dealing with the ups and downs of daily life in a subtle, not-in-your-face way, you have a broken brain and should stick to lesser shows like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, etc.

Never in any of those shows will you find anything that even comes close to the Finnerty coma, or Tony talking to Junior in the last episode, or Janice's last talk with Tony. Or Adriana's silent car ride with Silvio. Hell, even small moments like Tony showing up to Raymond's birthday party just to leave immediately for ice cream at home. Or Vito Spatafore being mockingly referred to as Vitto Misto.

Wrong. Only The Wire is as good.

Your parents probably read that in some dumb article instead of watching the show.

The Sopranos portrays a very clear divide between a small criminal minority against the mass majority of upstanding Italian American citizens. People who claim that The Sopranos portrays Italian Americans in a racist way are extremely shallow in their thought processes.
>>
It's good, but there are parts that feels like cheap soap opera. Mainly any drama involving Tony's family. I still wish we had more Melfi ass on screen.

>>
>>85559998
Parents probably didn't want him to have a goomba name like Giacomo so they called him James.
>>
>>85560049
Tony's homelife isn't the problem, the way it's handled is the problem. You can make good family drama without making it look like soap opera.
You really should stop reading comments while trying to find a way to get offended. It clouds your judgement and affects your reading comprehension.

No joke. Once saw Late Autumn with a friend. He didn't like it. He thought it was a soap opera.
>>
>>85560224
People tend to say that while Tony was being a complete bottom of the barrel cunt in that scene, Janice still deserved it for literally abandoning her child.

While the above is true, the real victims in that scene are the kids. There is no reason for Tony to do that in front of Bobby's kids.

Yeah fair point, Janice isn't exactly a sympathetic character.

She might have improved herself and not been such a cunt to Bobby's kids. Sad really, I really feel for those kids, to have a relatively nice mob dad and then for him to die and be stuck with that bitch.

Season 4 would've worked better as a standalone show. They taking McNulty from the spotlight really was a turn down.
The series lost a lot of steam after season 2, but that's a personal opinion.
>>
>>85560324
The real victims of the last episode of the show are Bobby's kids. The last scene with Janice is literally her saying that she won't even try any more with Bobby Jr and that "maybe" Sofia she has something with.

If this was a good universe, Janice would have been shot and Bobby would be there for the kids.

>>
>>85559762
This is a bad opinion to have. It shows a really narrow thought process.

The Sopranos doesn't glorify crime or the mafia. It shows them in a very true light.

Tony is a terrible, terrible person, and the show shines the spotlight on how awful these people are.
>>
>>85560429
>will Janice once again poison everything around her?
Bingo.

>>85560462
I know, but still a major dick move. He was incredibly jealous of her "improvement", disingenuous or not.

Yeah it's me. Sometimes I wonder how many people actually post on this god forsaken board.

I've been listening to the No Fuckin' Ziti podcast while doing a rewatch. It's therapy for any hardcore sopranos fan. I've even written in a few times and they've answered a few of my questions.

Nice man. I listened to one episode of that podcast, I think the first. I plan on listening to more when I start my next rewatch. Maybe around this Christmas.

Do you read fiction leisurely? Wondering if you have any recommendations. I'm finishing blood meridian now and about to start infinite jest but will highly consider anything you may recommend.

I remember you recommending Mulholland Drive (which I enjoyed a lot) and Blue Ruin I think (which I never got around to).

Yeah there don't seem to be many people on this board at times. It does seem like there's a little resurgence of Sopranos threads though.

I do read quite a bit. In fact, some people have accused me of being the pynchonposter in the Twin Peaks threads, but there is no evidence to support that accusation.

I read Infinite Jest a few years ago. Honestly I don't think it's very good. David Foster Wallace was obviously a smart guy, but you can really tell that Infinite Jest was long for the sake of being long, which in itself is a theme in the book. If you like Blood Meridian, check out The Border Trilogy. The Crossing (2nd book out of the three) is easily one of McCarthy's best. I don't know if you've read any Pynchon, but I have this chart for him if you want it. He's the author I enjoy reading the most. I finished 2666 a few weeks ago and that was fantastic. Under The Volcano by Lowry I really enjoyed as well, prose off the charts. Far Tortuga by Peter Matthiessen is one of the best things I've read in years. I can keep going if you want.

Well Italians aren't discriminated against in Italy.

Name one American movie that portrays Americans positively.

fuuuuuck don't tell me that Finnertybro, I bought infinite jest because I think it'll take longer to read than the duration I can rent it from the library for. In a thread on /lit/ where people posted songs and had books recommended to them, I posted "the big ship" by brian eno (appeared at the end of a film about DFW called the end of the tour) and someone recommended Mason & Dixon by Pynchon. I'm not American but hopefully it'll still be a good read.

To keep things on topic, how f good was the use of music in the sopranos? I heard that song at the end of the episode where they're at the funeral for Jackie Sr. in season 1. Such a 90s feel to that song.

Don't sweat it. Infinite Jest is worth reading just so you are in with the /lit/ canon. If you've never read Pynchon before, don't start with Mason & Dixon. Start with V.

Sopranos has the best use of music that I've seen in a tv show. So many memorable endings are made with the music. Chickentown, I'm Not Like Everybody Else, etc.

Or
>Tony looking at his war general painting right before deciding to kill Tony B
>Chris watching some family at the gas station right before deciding to bail on Adriana

It's these silent moments that make the show ascend to high art.
>>
>>85566423
The family at the gas station was maybe a little on the nose, but I do agree. So many other shows just fail to capture moments like these without doing it as some grand "super profound rite?" overdone thing.
