Is it fair to judge older movies with the same standards in terms of acting, effects and action that we hold films to today?
For example, I watched Seven Samurai and was severely unimpressed by what passed as "action scenes" in it. Just yesterday I watched The Third Man and while it's regarded as an all-time great film, the acting just felt campy compared to what is seen as great acting in modern films

I'm glad we're finally having this thread. Old movies are complete shit. Acting styles change every year, same as fashion, and pretending that movies from the 20th century are even watchable is laughable at best. Unfortunately, old people are the majority and have all the money so their opinions shape filmmaking and criticism itself. Really though, all of this shit is about to fade to fucking dust. It's a new era. Wait til 2024. Things are going to change in 2024.

Action scenes in Seven Samurai are better than action scenes in virtually any modern film. I doubt you actually watched it.
