An interesting difference between Patty and Selma: Patty is the lesbian, while Selma is quite straight. They both hate Homer, but Patty's man-hating is more thoroughgoing, which goes together with her lesbianism.

When Homer's life is about to be ruined, and Patty is in a position to help, she won't do it. Selma will actually help Homer in his time of need, because she loves her sister Marge and when it comes right down to it, would rather that Marge be happy than that Homer be destroyed. Patty is the other way around. Because she's a lesbian and can't empathize with a woman having the capacity to love a man, even a man that she hates.

There's some early episode where Selma shows weakness in front of Patty, to the point of being about to help Homer, but Patty checks her: "Don't be stupid!" Selma has to go behind Patty's back to do the right thing.
