del Toro really seems to be sliding off into the Tim Burton realm of artistic irrelevance, where he gets less and less interested in story (or less beholden to it for commercial purposes) as time goes on -- you can guess pretty much the entire story of The Shape of Water from that trailer -- so all that's left is his aesthetic, and even that increasingly feels second-hand and dull. the awful truth of The Shape of Water is that it's not a Hellboy prequel, del Toro was just brazenly lazy enough to reuse all the major elements of Abe Sapien, with a little Jean-Pierre Jeunet mixed in.
