The trick is accepting your flaws, this rigid way of thinking comes from too much self-judgment. You're afraid not because you fear the judgment of others, but from yourself.

If you make a mistake, don't beat yourself up. Realize other people make mistakes as well and that it's completely natural. I'm not a neurologist or anything, but I think stuttering is caused by this very notion--too much self-judgment.

I was on an anti-anxiety pill for a bit and I fucking hated it. Therapy costs a fortune and doesn't get results for some.

The key things I found to unfuck yourself were:
>People in public are way too busy to notice you in the first place
>if you do speak to them and stutter, a stranger on the street or a busy retail clerk will forget you even existed within a matter of minutes or hours
>in a public gathering you are just one of a hundred faces in the crowd and no one has time for you or 99% of the other people there.
>They will only remember you if you seriously do some kind of Peter Sellers tier fuckup and knock a wedding cake over and then fall into a fountain.

Once you come to terms that your very existence is a blur to the strangers around you it should help ease the pressure you feel to perform to meet their expectations. They don't have time to judge you and won't even remember you if they do.

A common exercise for social situations is to shift your focus from internal to external. When walking down the street occupy your mind with trivial tasks. Glance at a stranger (don't stare) and gather as much info as you can. What are they wearing? Are they attractive? How fast are they walking? Are they looking in stores as they pass or at their phone? Put your mind to work analyzing other people instead of yourself for a change.

If you keep your focus on other people in a public place you will have less time to worry about your own self image. Keep yourself in a relaxed semi-distracted state, listen in on otehr stories being told etc, and focus on the drink in hand and the people around you.If you are in a group of people talking do not feel obligated to jump in and say something. Let others initiate conversations with you so you can avoid "rehearsed dialog" anxiety and fuckups that follow.

At worst they will remember you as "the quiet guy" which is fine. The anxiety fades with more social experience.
